Finalising Build

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've been bouncing around for a cpl of years now with an...adequate home network setup. After moving house and settling in, getting used to a new routine with our 5 week old daughter...

...I have decided take a bit of time to get a more efficient network running.

This isn't my first thread re: this matter, but hopefully it will be my last for awhile :)

The below diagram is a reflection of hardware that I already own.

I have a couple of question though, before I finalise anything.

1. Plex and Crashplan. Better to run on separate drive, outside the array? Ideally they could sit on a cache drive and free up a Sata port, however, my understanding is that this creates an issue with TRIM/GC.

2. Hmm, mental blank. I had a lot of questions last night when i was planning this out. So maybe some more general stuff...

Active Directory: I've not really used it much. Did a little bit of Windows Server Domain stuff in a night course i took 10 years ago. I wonder if it would be overkill in a home environment. Centralised user accounts and improved security are the two big benefits I see.

Cache Drive: I have heard reports that with newer versions of unRAID there is less of a performance gain. Is it still worthwhile?

Hardware: Anybody see any issues or have suggestions regarding my current plan?

Thanks for your time.

Just realised that I have currently been running 6 drives in my N40L (WHS machine about to be rebuilt as one half of my OP build) without using the eSata port. The two port sata expansion card I threw in meant that eSata wasn't needed.

So now I have gotten to thinking, if i made use of the eSata port, and ditched the dedicated NIC, would something like this dual m.2 PCI-E adapter:

http://www.ramcity.com.au/buy/bplus-dual-m.2-ngff-ssd-to-pcie-2.0-x4-adapter/M2P4S

be worthwhile for my cache and addons drives?

If it was compatible it would free up two sata ports for storage drives giving me:

1 x parity

5 x storage

1 x unRAID (flash)

1 x cache

1 x addons/plugins (not sure what the jargon is for unRAID)

Thoughts?

EDIT: *sigh* dual m.2 adapter I linked requires 2 * PCI-Ex4 or greater.

Still, a single m.2+sata adpater and some double sided tape for an ssd would get a similar result.
