Help: Good Parity (I think), Bad Config, Bad Disk

Featured Replies

Long story short, I was getting some read errors on my parity disk (no write errors) and purchased a new disk to replace it. I only have 8 slots so whenever I add a disk, I move the files from the smallest disk to other space on the array and initconfig to free up a slot. I then remove the old disk, add the new disk, preclear and add to array. I moved all the files off the smallest disk (disk 6), shutdown the array and ran initconfig. The trouble started when I accidentally assigned a data disk (disk 7) as parity and brought the array up. I then noticed that disk 7 (actually the parity disk) was shown as unformatted. I quickly recognized my error and shut down the parity sync but now the real disk 7 shows unformatted. I tried to recover disk 7 with reiserfsck but so far without success.

So the situation is as follows (so I think):

  • Parity is still valid for the array config before initconfig was issued
  • Disk 6 has not changed but is not seen as part of the array config
  • Disk 7 is damaged but otherwise functional

What I like to do to try and recover disk 7 is force the config so that disk 6 is seen as part of the array and disk 7 is seen as disabled. Assuming the array is still valid for that old config, if I could get to that point, I could try to rebuild disk 7 (assuming my parity disk behaves).

Is this possible?
