New Server Build – Thoughts / Comments / Concerns / ??? – Confirmations…

Featured Replies

I’ve been running unRAID for a few years now on older repurposed hardware and have been generally happy with it.  Lately, I’ve gotten a case of the upgrade “bug”.

So far, I’ve decided on the Fractal Designs Arc Midi R2 case (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811352036) for its’ decent mid-range size and air cooling capabilities (purchased).  This will give me space for eight drives and maybe space for some more with the 5.25” bays in the future (and potentially more if I use something like the one in this thread http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=35249.0 ).

I’m going to go with unRAID 6 (whichever build is available when the hardware is assembled), but I don’t plan on using much in the way of plugins / Docker apps (at this point).  This server will primarily be for storage at the moment.  In the future, I might add sabnzb, sickbeard, couchpotato and might play around with a couple of VMs.

One item that I would like, is to hopefully keep unRaid as stock as possible and use my Cyberpower UPS http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00429N19M/.  No disrespect to the author of unmenu (which I really liked), but it caused instability in my setup for some reason.  So I'd like to be able to configure my UPS to shutdown automatically without a ton of manual configurations.

My build so far:

Case - Fractal Designs Arc Midi R2 - purchased http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811352036

PSU - SeaSonic X Series X650 Gold - purchased http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151088

Parity Drive - Western Digital Red 6 TB NAS Hard Drive – purchased  http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LO3KR96/

Data drives – 4x2TB Samsung SpinPoint drives migrated from current setup and additional 6TB WD Red drives up to a max of 8 drives.

I’m not really planning on a cache drive unless it’s really needed for the Docker apps / VMs.  At that point I have a few 1TB 7200RPM drives around that I think would be fine.

So far I have a couple of options for the motherboard.

1. SUPERMICRO MBD-X10SAE-O http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813182831

2. SUPERMICRO MBD-X10SAT-O http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813182830

I can’t see a reason to choose the more expensive of the two.  They’re both similar chipsets and NICs, both have 8 SATA6 ports, support ECC memory, etc.  Can anyone honestly justify the difference in cost if I’m not required to add additional SATA controllers at this point?  I’ll be running all drives off of the built in SATA ports until there are more drives than I currently plan.  If there are any cheaper boards that I should consider, I’d love to hear of them.

I’d like to go ahead and buy the motherboard quickly to start on the physical build, any suggestions on that is greatly appreciated.

As for the CPU options I have the following and the only difference I can see is the price.  So I’ll just choose one of the three depending on cost at the time of purchase.  That is, unless someone can point me to a reason for a different processor choice that would be better.

1. Intel E3-1226 v3 3.3GHz http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117319

2. Intel E3-1231 v3 3.4GHz http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117316

3. Intel E3-1246 v3 3.5GHz http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117318

EDIT:  I found that the E3-1231 v3 does not have a built in GPU so it wouldn't support the onboard video of the MBD.

Mem – Crucial 16GB (2x8GB) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148669

I believe that with both of the motherboards and the CPU choices that the onboard video should be sufficient without any additional hardware.

Right now, I think this should be a pretty decent system that will keep me going for at least a few more years and I can’t really see any “pitfalls”.  But that’s one of the reasons I’m asking for the experts’ opinions.

Are there any “better / cheaper” options at MBD or CPU that I might consider?
