Can't find (see) shares on Mac or Vista

Featured Replies

Just setup my unRAID and can see the Tower on both my Vista 64 bit HTPC (Internet Explorer) and Mac Pro (Safari) and make changes. I created 3 Shares (Music, Movies and Trailers) but don't see them on either computer.  I have hit Apply several times and tried Undue (though it doesn't seem to delete them). Also the drives were spun down and when I add a new Share one spun up so it seems to be taking the info. Did notice than under settings it had Workgroup: Mshome but my PC says the Workgroup is WORKGROUP.  Tried changing but still don't see them under Network on my HTPC or in Finder on my Mac Pro.

User Shares Enabled and All setting Export read/write and no User Name or Password set.

As a side not you can't make the USB drive using Vista 64 bit.  Tried on 2 PC but it will not finish writing the name of the hidden file.  Had this same problem when making a boot USB drive for my Dell Mini Hackintosh.

I reset (shutdown) my unRAID and now I can see something on my Mac. I can't copy any files to the Shares and I don't know what flash is or why it shows the 2 data HDs (disc1 and 2 if that's what they are).  Also I still don't see anything on my HTPC.

Edit: I think I have it copying.  It looks like you can only copy files and not folders with files.  Does this sound correct?

Disregard, I reset my HTPC, hit a refresh button and now the Shares show up. Being a Mac guy I just used to things working.  This Vista stuff is sooooooo confusing, unintuitive and complicated.  To bad you can't make a full fledged HTPC using a Mac.

Do a google search on "master browser" and you'll see that for each "LAN" MS-Windows attempts to assign the task of keeping track of the shared drives to one machine on the LAN.  Furthermore, the LAN is not scanned frequently... One reference said it only looks at 12 minute intervals...  If no PC takes on the "master browser" role, you will not see the shared resources.  When a shared drive is new, it might not show up on the PC right away...

Disk1 and Disk 2 are where you can directly access each drive you have installed. Flash is to access the USB flash drive. At the top of the shares setup page there are settings where you can hide these if you desire.

The Disk shares can be useful to organize the files. You can write to them directly and keep things grouped together on a single drive for example. This helps to keep multiple drives from spinning up when you access something. An example of what can happen - if you setup (or use) the shares wrong you could write a copy of a DVD or Blueray folder structure to a share and parts could end up spread out over multiple drives. If there were 8 drives in the array the data could end up on say 3 or 4 of them and then when you access that DVD or Blueray 3 or 4 drives have to spin up. It causes extra delay and power usage.

You can upgrade unRAID by just copying the files to the "Flash" share and then rebooting the server.

So, set them to hidden and "unhide" them if you need or want to use them.
