Help with SMART Output

Featured Replies

I just got a new 2tb drive, ran a full cycle of pre-clear script.

The script said the drive was good, so I replaced my dying drive with the new one.

Now I am seeing this in the SMART output:

Is the drive bad? The "Reallocated_Sector_Ct" is still zero, but the "Raw_Read_Error_Rate" and "Seek_Error_Rate" are high. What should I do.

Thanks,

Yes! the drive is Seagate 2TB NAS drive.

The SMART attributes require some experience to read them correctly.  With the 2 error rates you mention, you never look at the RAW number, as it's strictly a manufacturers field.  What you look at are the VALUE numbers, which here are 114 and 100, both perfect.  (Actually 114 means better than perfect, but ...)

The fact that the Raw_Read_Error_Rate has a RAW number that's non-zero is always indicative of a Seagate drive.  The other manufacturers hide their values, put zeroes here.  That doesn't mean a thing.

189 High_Fly_Writes        0x003a  068  068  000    Old_age  Always      -      32

Not trying to unnecessarily raise concerns, but 32 high fly writes on a drive this new is a little high.

In comparison, I have several Seagates with high fly writes in the single digits, and increase very very occasionally by one.

My research indicates that these can be caused by excessive vibration. I would monitor this going forward. If values rise more than a couple a month, I would suggest looking at ways to reduce vibration. If they stay in this range I'd say you are fine.
