January 5, 201610 yr Update: Based on info I read and a friend, I decided to start the area as there's no reason to think these drives are faulty. Hello! I am setting up a new server. I'm a new user and only set up one unraid server before (4.x years ago). I've watched all the videos and scanned threads and done a search but still have a question: I am running 6.1 Plus. It's installed and working and am now adding drives: Parity: 1 x Seagate Archive HDD v2 ST8000AS0002 8TB 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5 (Parity) (8TB Parity Drive) Array: 4 x WD Red 6TB NAS Desktop Hard Disk Drive - Intellipower SATA 6 Gb/s 64MB Cache (4x6TB HD) Cache: 1 x SAMSUNG 850 EVO 2.5" 250GB SATA III 3-D Vertical Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) (250GB SSD Cache Drive) I ran START on the 8TB already and it checked out fine. No errors. (yay!) I am now running the test on the 6TBs. As you know, this takes a while. Is it permissible to start the array and being parity sync prior to finishing Start testing? I would like to start sync tonight so I can begin transfer in the morning. But... I also want this array to work and be reliable so if I HAVE to wait, I'll wait. The docs don't seem to say anything about having to wait for the test to run, so will it account for any errors after the test runs? 6.1 is so neat.. I just can't wait to set up VMs! EDIT: I found my own answer and confirmed with a friend. I CAN start the array and format without SMART and only have to do it if there's a problem or if I'm setting up an array that absolutely positively has to be flawless. If this is bad advice, someone yell at me... 'cuz I'm startin' my array! Yee Haw!
