Starting a fresh array of 3 drives, I'm getting a red light only on the parity drive, regardless of the actual drive selected to be the parity. In otherwords, I switched the two Sata and Pata drives around with the same result. The parity drive appears to write, but doesn't mount like the two data drives. Is this normal until the parity is complete?

Yes.. it is normal. 

 

You are right, the parity drive does not get mounted like the other drives... it does not contain a filesystem.  It does not need to be formatted either, so don't look for that step to occur on the parity drive.

 

Once parity is calculated, the "light" will turn green.
