Expanding drive capability

Featured Replies

I currently have an Antec Three hundred case and all my drive slots (6) are allocated. I would like to add a few drives by adding a drive cage but I don't know what to look for. I have tried looking on this forums, and I found a bunch of info concerning the drive cages itself, but not about how to install it correctly and if it will be compatible with the motherboard and what other parts that are needed. If I would install fe an Icy Dock 5X3 cage, will I need only one connector to the PSU? Will I need a SATA cable for each drive? Or will I only need one cable to connect it to the motherboard? Do I need an extra drive controller card or something? This is currently very unclear to me.

Based on the pictures, it looks like an Icy Dock 5x3 cage requires 3 hookups from the PSU, which makes sense, I know my 3x2 cages require 2 connections. You will also need  one SATA connection pre hdd in the cage. As far as I know, there are no compatibility issues with cages like this, its really no different from connecting the hdd to the mobo directly. If you are out of SATA connections on your mobo, then a controller card could be an option, depending on your needs and the hw you have.

Thanks for the info, it's clearer now. I know I'll need a controller card since I do not have any available SATA ports left on my mobo. Just need to find one that is cheap and good :)
