GPU passthrough only works with old GPU, not with 2 differnet newer cards.

I'm currently writing this on a Kubuntu VM using the AMD Mobility Radeon HD 5430 with passthrough, but that card is completely unable to handle the 2560x1080 resolution my monitor is.

I've been having been running into an issue where I can only have GPU passthrough working with an old AMD Mobility Radeon HD 5430 (audio passes through just fine). I have not been able to get my Radeon HD 7770 to work consistently. I have been able to get it to passthrough to a Windows 10 VM only a few times. It very shortly runs into driver issues and will only boot into Safe Mode. Also, I was completely unable to get audio passthrough to work at all. I thought maybe it was an issue with this particular card, so I went out yesterday and bought a XFX AMD Radeon R7 370. I am completely unable to get this card to successfully passthrough at all so far. The VM's seem to start just fine, it's just my monitor (LG ultra wide) doesn't display anything. It seems to turn on, but only displays black for a bit and then turns off.

Any ideas why I cannot get a Radeon HD 7770 or Radeon R7 370 to passthrough? Do AMD cards just not work as well as Nvidia? I was hoping to stick with AMD since my monitor has Freesync, but if Nvidia works better then I'll go return my R7 370 and get a Nvidia card.
