Intel SS4200-e (Scaleo Home Server)

Featured Replies

There isn't clear detail of what motherboard is used in this unit.  Here is a link to the pdf of technical information.

http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/server/ss4200-e/sb/CS-028562.htm

The unit comes with EMC software on an IDE DOM.  I removed it and booted with UNRAID.

Used 3 x 1.5tb WD15EADS drives.

Holds 4 sata, 2 esata, 4 usb and ide.

The only issue after rebooting was the unit tries to boot from the hard drive.  I modified the BIOS to reorder the drives to have  USB first. That fixed the issue.  You can also push the reset and power to boot fom USB.

You can access the BIOS by connecting a DTK/INTEL RS-232 and null modem cable.  Set connection to 115200/8/1/0 RTS/CTS.

I am getting 9.5-10mbs w parity on.

It is a good entry level, complete and very quiet all-in-one solution.

Syslog looks pretty good, but not completely clean.  The second and third drives required an additional reset before they could be initialized, which is not normal, and I don't know why.

The following line is unusual, concerning your Intel Pro/1000 network chipset, should be Google'd for its significance:

e1000e 0000:01:00.0: Warning: detected ASPM enabled in EEPROM

Otherwise, it does look like a nice and simple system, with 6 SATA ports currently.

I am getting 9.5-10mbs w parity on.

You are connecting at 100mbps currently, so 9.5 is about the max you can transmit.  Once you connect to other Gigabit components, you should see much faster, especially once you upgrade to the latest v4.5 final.

The LAN uses an INTEL 82573E.  Jumbo frames are not supported.

17 ASPM/Jumbo Frames Disabled Due to Early Receive Threshold Overrun

Buffer

Problem: The Jumbo Frames feature uses the Early Receive Threshold (ERT) in the 82573

when ASPM is enabled. When ERT is enabled, Jumbo Frames may possibly

corrupt system memory.

Implication: This only occurs when ASPM is enabled and is most evident when jumbo frames

are used. When the 82573 is performing an ERT (depending on the value set in

the ERT register) and a corrupted packet is received, there is the possibility that

the 82573 can overrun the buffer that it is accessing the receive data into by up to

256 bytes (size of a PCIe* transaction). This overrun occurs because the 82573 is

accessing data into the receive buffer but then aborts the transaction due to the

error. The buffer will be re-used for the next receive packet.

Workaround: When ERT is disabled, the decreased FIFO size limits the size of available space

for receive traffic. Jumbo Frames (up to packet size of 9KB) with software

release 10.3 is supported on the 82573L Gigabit Ethernet Controller as long as

ASPM is disabled.2,3

Status: Intel does not plan to resolve this erratum in the 82573 Gigabit Ethernet

Controller. Jumbo frames is not supported in 82573E/V & is supported with the

workaround above in 82573L.
