Looking for Compatible Mobo for AMD A8-7650K and UnRaid

Featured Replies

;D Hello.

So I am building a new Media Server/Media Center/Gaming Rig.

I have chosen UnRaid for a few reasons, but mostly for the ease of adding storage to the array in the future, and because of it's extreme virtualization features.  I want to be able to run at least one (perhaps more in the future) VM for gaming, and another for Kodi and NextPVR.

This media server will be positioned in the living room behind my television and act as the main media experience in the living room, as well as serving other devices on the network using Kodi.

The parts I have put together for this system can be found here. I am also planning on using two existing DVR Tuner cards (one PCI and the other PCI Express x1)

So the parts list includes:

AMD A8-7650k APU

8 GB RAM (either DDR2 or DDR3)

3x 2TB Hard Disk Drives (1 for Parity, 2 for Storage)

1x 240GB Solid State Drive (for Cache)

PCI DVR Tuner Card

PCI Express x1 Tuner Card

Currently I have selected the ASRock FM2A58M-HD+ R2.0 Motherboard due to number of SATA ports, APU compatability, price, and the fact that it has both PCI and PCI Express x1 slots for me to use my existing DVR hardware.  But I don't know if it will work with UnRaid, or if it will fully support all virtualization features.

The board needs to be ATX or smaller to fit the case I have chosen, and price is a major concern.

Can anyone help me find motherboards that fit the criteria and will work with unraid?

I had great performance from the Asus A88X Gamer.  8 SATA ports, decent Intel NIC, plenty of slots.  Really, really nice board.

I doubt you'll be getting any DDR2 with an FM2 socket chip. Also, I'd err on the side of caution and suggest buying slightly more powerful parts. The APUs aren't really cut out to be anything special in a standard desktop, let alone running a gaming VM.

For running a gaming VM and still being able to support other functions you really want a full desktop CPU, if you need to stick to AMD for cost reasons, you may want to wait on Zen to come out.
