January 17, 201016 yr Hey gang. Got the big beast up and running today. 3x 1.5TB (One is parity), 5x 1TB, 6x 750GB, and 1x 500GB (set as cache), (one 750 and 500GB cache drives are IDE) Asus P5B-VM DO. All drives appeard successfully. I assigned 1.5TB WD Drive which is plugged into SATA port 1 on board, as parity drive. Everything seemed cool. I assigned all the data drives as well as cache drive successfully. Started parity build. Everything was fine before I left for dinner. Hopped on around, now to check on the system, unmenu "Main" tab shows DISK_INVALID under disk status for the 1.5 TB parity drive. Parity is still building, I checked syslog, and nothing of relevance, or anything "red" shows in the logs. Should I stop the parity build, am I doing it for nothing? Is this somehow normal? (I didn't get this on my 3x 500GB test build box) Any suggestions or explanations would be great, if not to just clear my mind and have an understanding on whats going on. The 1.5 TB were just opened today. Latest firmware was updated on Asus board, and I am running Unraid Server Pro just purchased from Lime. One last thing, under "unRAID Menu" screen, the drives are all listed under "Disk Status". The "Parity" drive circle is red. Below the "Disk Status" box on the same page under "Command Area", there is also a red circle beside the "Started" status. The build is running. Thanks so much for your help gang!!!!
January 17, 201016 yr Post a syslog. Usually when first building parity the indicator is orange, but sometimes it is hard to tell the colors apart. The syslog will tell the whole story. Of it is computing parity, let it continue.
January 17, 201016 yr Author I have attached the Syslog as well as a screen shot of the screen that is making me "concerned". Thank you so much for your reply and helping to go over this with me. syslog-2010-01-17.txt
January 17, 201016 yr Author There are also 0 errors detected on all drives so far. (I didn't capture the right side of the screen) lol
January 17, 201016 yr You seem to be doing fine. If you scroll down you'll probably see a "Format" button to format your newly added disks. You can press it at any time. unMENU just uses red for anything abnormal. (and parity being invalid is not normal ... except for when you first start your array and it has not yet been calculated.) You disk temperatures on two of your disks are WAY higher than I'm comfortable with. Think about adding a fan or two to get the temperatures below 40c.
January 17, 201016 yr Author It finished the parity check successfully and YOU WERE RIGHT..all the lights are now green. Thanks so much Joe L. (any relation to Kal L?) Im formatting now, then Im going to setup the share methods and bring my data to its new home. I look forward to understanding the unraid environment better so that I may be able to help others out someday like you helped me. Thanks again!!
January 17, 201016 yr I'd think about getting the disk temperatures lower than about 40 degrees centigrade. Better air flow, more fans... less obstructions. Above 50c bad things happen.... and you are too close for comfort. Glad things are working and all green.
