I need a little help swapping cases

Featured Replies

I'm moving my UnRAID server's guts from the old case that holds 3 AMS 5 in 3 backplane modules to a Lian Li PC-A77B that will hold 4 backplanes. I need to know if there is anything special I need to do with UnRAID to facilitate this change. What happens if all the drives don't end up on the same SATA ports or even on the same controllers? How diligent do I need to be with this?

Take a screen shot of the current "devices" page before you move to the new case.

After moving to the new case, when powering up, if the array does not start on its own (because some port assignments were swapped) go to the devices page, un-assign and re-assign the drives in the correct slots in the array.  It will then start for you.

Do not add or remove drives during the move to the new case.  Once your server is back up and running with the same number of drives, then you can add new.

It does not matter if the drives are on the same controllers or ports as long as you re-assign them on the "devices"  page to their respective slots in the array.

Thanks Joe.

I'll be doing this as well, but wanted to clarify one thing...the only thing I'm moving to the new case are the drives (and possibly the SATA controller)...so given that is there anything else I need to consider?  I assume the only thing that could cause an issue is if the new (not really new) mobo isn't compatible?

You face the same issues as anyone setting up a new server. Most notably bad or loose cables / bad, incompatible or misconfigured memory.

Right, but as far as moving the drives to the new box, as long as I follow Joe's advice above and assign the drives properly, I should be okay in that area?

When I gutted my box the other day to change the cooling, I put labels on each SATA cable with the port # on one end; the last 4 of the S/N of the drive on the other. This made putting it back the same way easy. I assumed I could do what Joe suggested if I messed up, but it is reassuring to know for sure.
