How to make 2nd unRAID USB Drive exact copy of 1st USB unRAID Drive?

Featured Replies

I've read the current manual, the FAQ's and one post where a user asked how to backup his unRAID USB boot drive and was told to simply copy the "config" folder to another safe location (the answer did not indicate what to do with the "config" folder if needed to restore a damaged or corrupted unRAID USB boot drive.

My question is I have two identical Corsair USB drives with unRAID PRO licenses. The second drive is a spare in case the first should ever fail. I want to make sure that the 2nd USB stick is always identical to the 1st USB stick (excluding the unique key license file on each USB stick).

The 1st USB drive currently contains 'uumenu' plus a Eastern U.S. timezone file. Do I simply copy the "config" and "unmenu" folders to the 2nd USB drive to make an exact copy of the 1st drive's unRAID server setup, or is there more to it? If so, what am I overlooking?

Thanks, in advance, for your help.

Assuming you loaded unRAID on both flash drives, and ran syslinux on both, and set the volume labels on both the UNRAID, then yes, just copy the config folder from the one to the other (and the unmenu folder).  On each flash drive put its respective ".key" file.

If you make any configuration changes on the main drive you use, make a fresh copy of the config folder and save it to the second flash drive.

Thanks for the confirmation.

Here is how I keep the files and folders of my flash drive backed up.  If you keep it regularly backed up, then you can restore it to the second flash drive only whenever you need to, and not keep unnecessarily writing to that second flash.  Changes don't happen very often though.

It seemed useful to me to create a wiki page listing the various files and folders that might be found on an unRAID flash drive, so I have created one, and hope others might be interested enough to add more files and descriptions to it.

Files on the unRAID flash drive

It's very rough and incomplete so far.  It includes a note about which files need backing up, and which files are usually involved in unRAID upgrades.  It is not a particularly important page, but could occasionally be useful, as a catalog of most of the files users may find there.  To repeat, it is still VERY incomplete.
