unRAID as an OSX server home directory sharepoint?

Featured Replies

I just discovered unRAID and really like the concept.  I have a particular use in mind but I'm not sure it is even possible.

I work for a school and we have been looking for an inexpensive solution to protect our user home directories on a new Mac Mini running Snow Leopard server - right now we are just using the internal 500GB drives in RAID1 but expect those will fill up quickly.  I would love to create user home directories on an unRAID box that we could simply add drives to as needed.

I've got a test box running unRAID now and have successfully gotten it to share via SMB, but to the best of my knowledge OSX server only supports AFP and NFS for home directories.  We tried to get NFS working on our test box with no success, and considering it has only just been implemented we decided not to spend any more time on that.  We also tried to get AFP working via Netatalk but decided half way through the procedure that even if we got it working, the fact that it will only show the individual drives that make up the unRAID kind of defeated the purpose.

So rather than blow a bunch of time figuring this out, it seemed appropriate to ask those of you who likely already know - is this usage a pipe dream or could this scenario actually work and be worth putting more effort into?
