Lower GPU Performance in VM (Capped Core Clock)

Featured Replies

Hello Everybody,

I've recently been tinkering with unraid to be used as a NAS/Gaming System. So obviously i went towards Making a VM of windows 10.

My System Specs are

CPU : AMD FX  8370 (Stock Setting with Stock Cooler)....(2 Cores + 2 Threads. as in CPUS 3-4, 5-6 passed through to VM)

Motherboard : M5A97 R2.0 (Supports HVM and IOMMU)

Ram : 16 GB DDR3 1866Mhz (8GB passed to VM)

GPU : GTX 960 4GB/ GTX 1060 6GB

PSU : 530 Corsair Power Supply (No 80 plus ratting)

To eliminate CPU bottleneck. During bare metal benchmarking i disable 2 cores from the bios to effectively make it a 2 core 4 thread cpu ( same as that used in the VM )

By eliminating CPU bottleneck i mean that both bare metal and the VM have the same cpu horsepower ( within margin of error )

From the moment i began playing games or running benchmarks inside the VM i felt the performance was less compared to running bare metal. Namely the GPU Performance.

In my case according to msi afterburner ( and other monitoring softwares ).  I have 2 GPUS, a 1060 6GB and 960 4GB . At first i experienced performance drops with both gpus ( roughly 15-20% fps loss). I tried setting Performance Mode in Nvidia Control Panel and High Performace mode in windows 10. but still both my cards would be frozen at their respective base clocks. The memory usually was normal. but sometimes would be frozen as well. I was Hoping that this was just a monitoring limitation because of it being inside a VM. but that does not account for the performance loss.

If anyone out there was facing this problem and has a solution. please do share.
