[Solved] Preclear problems

Featured Replies

Hello, brand spanky new to unRaid, i tried a search but no luck so sorry if this is covered elsewhere

I just installed and Am following a tutorial that says preclear is a good idea.... but I am running into an issue... I have attached the log files (I think)

My initial gut feeling is it might be a temperature issue with the SAS card (SUPERMICRO AOC-SAS2LP-MV8 PCI-Express 2.0 x8 SATA / SAS 8-Port Controller Card) https://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16816101792 only because they (5 drives on SAS card) disapear from the dashboard.... but still appear in the Tools/system devices

Thanks

I move the SAS card to a PCI-E port that is closer to the main exhaust fans in the back..... this seems to have helped as the preclear on one drive has yet to cause a shutdown. YAY

Just started a second drive to see if that is too much for the card....and as I type this the second drive has vanished from the interface.... not sure what thats about

The controller you are using uses Marvell chipset, which is not recommended for unRaid. It sort of works but is subject to dropping disks and causing corruption. There are things you can do, like disabling VT-D in the bios, which sometimes helps. But I'd suggest looking at an LSI SAS9201-8i or other fully compatible controller.

This may or may not have anything to do with the problem you are having.

If the heat inside the computer is hot enough to affect the controller, that is a very bad thing. Moving the card to another slot is not a good solution. You need to invest in cooling fans! But you have not posted anything that shows the problem is heat related, so could have nothing to do with the temperature.

Suggest posting a diagnostics file if requesting support in the forums. It gives a lot of technical information that is often helpful in identifying the root cause of problems.

Thank you for the response SSD,

OH MAN.... the controller came recommended to me from an IT guy I know well.... but this was before I had decided to go with unRaid. Your statement that it sort of work is making sense given the periodic issues that I am seeing. I thought I had seen on here others using the same card.... but I could be mistaken.

The heat statement was purely speculative as I could not find a temperature readout for the controller..... subjectively the controllers heat sink was hot to the touch before I moved it (I have not checked it since moving)

Sorry being new I am not sure how to get a diagnostic file.... I had posted a log file from the preclear in the hopes that would help

A little perusing the stickies in the general support forum should help. :)

If you still have trouble. post back.

Hello, attached is the diagnostic file.... note this is after I removed the seagate drive (ST3000DM001-1CH166_Z1F33LYY) and re seated in bay..... it was not appearing in lists previous to this.

The second preclear I have been doing has been running good still

All the Hitachi drives (6 now) went through the preclear just fine but when I plugged the Seagate drive in again it was recognized.... started preclear.... then disappeared along with another Hitachi..... removed Seagate and Hitachi came back. I did find out that newegg will take back the sas card but WOW with shipping and restock that's would be $60 down the drain.

Could OPRom being active in the BIOS been a cause for the issue?

I just disabled it and am trying a preclear on the Seagate again

Or am I just wasting a bunch of time and should just get the LSI card?

Hi, I'm not sure if I am asking the right questions or not as I am a total noob but any feedback is welcomed

Seagate drive is preclearing and now on 60% post read

Thanks
