UnRaid for Gaming

Featured Replies

Hello. This is kind of related to Linus Tech Tips video of the UnRaid ( 2 Gamers 1 PC )

I’m a newb to all this stuff and was wondering if my build with possibly spare parts can do 2 Gamers 1 PC ( For me and a bud )

I7 – 6800k ( 6 core, 12 thread )

32GB RAM

850W PSU

500GB SSD + 4TB HDD ( I also have an Xbox One External HDD That is 4TB )

GTX 1080 Ti ( Have a GT 630 2GB and GTX 760 2GB as well for just the inital thing )

Can that do 2 Gamers 1 PC?

I’ll be getting a 1060 to use for System 2 and my 1080 Ti for System 1.

And I’ll be getting the same HDD Firecuda ( 2 of them ).

What do I do with my Current HDD and SSD?

And does the GT630 or GTX760 have to be the first PCIe slot or any?

The performance will depend on your graphics settings and the game. But yes - you should be able to configure two VMs each passing through a separate video card. It will depend somewhat on the motherboard, so you might search for it in the forums to see if there are any passthrough problems.

With this setup, you should get a pretty decent result (once you move to the better video cards). Obviously the 1080 will be better than the 1060, which would have nothing to do with the VM.

You'd most likely also need to pass through a separate USB controller to each VM for keyboard and mouse.

I believe you'd have problems passing through the GT 630 video card. UEFI is not supported. See here --- https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/172249/msi-gt630-4096-120820

Look up the SpaceInvader One videos for setting up a "daily driver" Windows 10 VM and the part 2 on transforming it to a gaming machine.

You might also need to find his video on passing through a primary nvidia video card.

Speaking from my own 2 Gamers 1 PC build, I think you'll be fine.  I was running on a 7700k and split it in half between my GF and I.  We had nothing dedicated to Unraid, and still ran 4k60fps in DOOM and Witcher 3.

As long as both users have different peripherals (USB keyboard+mouse models) you'll be fine passing through the USB devices.  I went with passing through USB controllers though, because you don't have to worry about certain devices not working or using a software tool to attach a certain USB device to a certain VM.

SpaceInvaderOne is probably your best resource for getting started.  I recommend using the Unraid trial.

Lastly, I would invest the effort into the rom fix for your graphics card, so that you can keep the workhorse GPUs in the system and nothing else.  You lose the terminal UI once you boot into a VM, but you can always ssh in or use the cmdline from RC18.  A beginner shouldn't really be doing much ssh'ing anyways, besides that GPU fix.

Keep your progress posted for other beginners.  Hopefully more will be motivated to try.

Is it possible to have my logitech gear on My VM and random stuff on my GFs VM?

It's recommended to have different models going to each VM, though I suggest passing through whole USB controllers.  This usually entails keeping a USB controller for unraid, passing through a second one on the mobo, and buying a third for a PCIe slot.

USB controllers manipulate certain USB ports on your mobo, and only research can determine what USB controllers are responsible for what ports.  Usually a motherboard has two, maybe three controllers, each responsible for 2-3 usb ports

It came off as harsh
