Failed parity disk removed, would like to swap a data disk to parity now, 4.5.4

Featured Replies

Hi!

I'm running 4.5.4, and just added 2 new drives to the array recently. Since they are the biggest drives in the array now, one of them had to go to parity. Well, that drive failed.

I removed it, and while I wait for the replacement, I'd like to put the other new data disk in place of the parity disk; there's not any data on it yet, so I won't lose anything and the array will be re-protected.

So, how do I achieve that?  In 'Devices', if I just remove the data disk to then put in Parity, I get 'Too many wrong and/or missing disks!'.

  Thanks!

If the drive has really failed, and you are not experiencing just a loose cable (VERY COMMON) or a bad cable (a bit less common) then

Stop the array

power down

remove the failed drive so you can RMA it

optionally, physically move the other larger empty data drive to the slot where parity was, but only if you want.

Power up.

Go to the devices page, assign the old empty data drive to the parity slot

Go back to the main page, it will say too many invalid/bad disks.

Log in via telnet, or log in at the system console and type

initconfig

Then, refresh the main web-interface page in your browser. All the indicators on the data drives should turn blue, the parity drive will probably be orange.

Press "Start" to begin a full parity calculation of the newly initialized drive configuration.  All your data on the other drives will still be there.

Joe: thanks, as always, very clear and precise instructions ;) Parity is rebuilding now.

I tested the drive in another computer, using other cables (sata and power); Seatools report it failed. They are the dreaded Seagate 1.5TB (with CC1H firmware, though).

Thanks again!

As I've always said, there are only two kinds of hard disks in the world....

No, not IDE and SATA...

The two kinds are:

Those that have crashed/failed

and

Those that have not yet crashed/failed.  But give them a bit more time, and they eventually will.

Sorry to learn of the disk's demise, but it is for that reason we have raid protected arrays.
