Mac user, please help with startup...

Recommended Posts

I have built an unRaid server modeled after the RB-1200, same motherboard and components. I am a Mac user and the last time I used DOS was to write a program for the Apple II Plus, so forgive my ignorance. I have configured the flash drive and was able to boot up on the first try with the basic software. I am trying to connect to the management utility to upgrade to the Server Plus, but, I need the server's IP address to access the utility from Safari on my Mac. I boot up and get to Tower login:

My question is, where do I go from here to get the IP address assigned to the server, and how do I assign a static address to the server.

I appreciate the tremendous amount of info in the forums, but I couldn't find an answer to these questions in an understandable form.

Thanks.

I found the problem. I had to enable a LAN ROM function in the BIOS. I got an IP address and was able to open the utility directly from Safari on the Mac.

One other question, however. I am now setting up a parity drive (1.5tb)  along with disk 1 (1tb) of the array. After these are formatted and the array is active, what is the best way to start migrating my 4tb of primarily video files to the server? Can I place a loaded drive in the array (formatted with HFS+) and simply copy to the server? If so, how?

Can I hook up an external box via USB (again formatted in HFS+) and copy to the array directly from that?

Is copying the files over the gigabit lan from my Mac to the unRaid as fast as the other options?

Thanks in advance.

Before putting in the parity, or, if you've already done so, disable it temporarily, in order to allow much faster transfers of files to the server.

You can physically install an HFS+ formatted drive into the server and, using the console entirely, create a mounting point, mount the drive, copy the files, repeat, rinse with next drive.

Once transfer is complete, install/enable the parity drive and let it build for the next umpteen hours it takes.

The "easy" way is use the LAN, HOWEVER, expect it to take roughly 2-3 days (may be longer) to transfer 4TBs.  Yep, that's right, DAYS, instead of HOURS...
