Will this system meet my needs?

Featured Replies

Hi--I am looking for a system that can support 4 tvs and 2 monitors watching various movies.  Will this system suffice?  Any suggestions on handling 8 hds and keeping them cool?

I'll assume you are talking about simple streaming and not PS3 media server or anything like that.

Yes, it most likely will suffice.  You can probably get away with a lot less, even.  The speed of the unRAID server isn't really the limiting factor (as in the CPU and RAM won't play a role), it is the speed of the network.  As long as you use a gigabit LAN router or switch and Cat5e or better cables (Cat6 would be best), and all the HTPCs, computers, and servers involved have gigabit NICs then you are doing the best you can do.  I can't guarantee it will work with 6 clients simultaneously since I've never tried it, but I expect it will.  Maybe not 6 HD streams simultaneously, but at least 6 SD streams or a mixture should work.

The Antec 1200 has a LOT of large fans, so I don't think cooling 8 drives will be a problem.  Opt for low power 'green' drives if you think cooling may be an issue due to environmental factors.
