Restore, refresh, initconfig - confused newby

Featured Replies

Please humour an old guy.

I have a "Refresh" button, next to the "Stop" button on the main page of the web GUI, which I read somewhere can be dangerous to use. I've also read that in later versions, the "Restore" button has been removed and replaced with a shell command "Initconfig". So, is the "Refresh" button the same as "Restore" and if so, why is it there? If not, what is the "Refresh" button for? I've just upgraded from 4.5.4. to 4.5.6 and the "Refresh" button is still there.

The "Refresh" button is exactly the same function as the "refresh" button on your browser.   It is not dangerous.

(Actually, long ago there was a bug where after you powered down the server using the "Power Down" button and then used the browser's refresh, it would power down again.  That was fixed by unRAID presenting a blank screen after powering down, over-writing the browser's "current" location so a refresh would not submit a power down button again.)

So press "refresh" as you please.  Ir use the browser's refresh button, or press "Control-R" (also a browser refresh on most browsers)

The button labeled as "Restore" was confusing to many user who thought  it had something to do with restoring their data after a disk failure.  It did not.  In fact, pressing it when a disk had failed would prevent re-constructing of the data onto a replacement disk.  That is why it was removed.    We actually lobbied for it to be re-labeled, but no good name for it could be agreed upon.   It was actually a "Initialize Configuration and Immediately Invalidate Any Parity Based On A Previous Configuration" button.

So... currently there is an "initconfig" command.  To set a new initial configuration.  It is exactly identical in function to the old "Restore" button, but not as easily confused by users of unRAID.

The "Refresh" button only asks that the browser re-draw the screen.  It has nothing to do with disk configuration.
