Cooler Master 590 vs 690

Featured Replies

Anyone have experience with the 690? I know the 590 is like the defacto standard for unRAID builds but I am assuming the 690 came out after the recommended build list?

I really like the slide out tray on the 690

as opposed to the one on the 590 where you have to remove the whole thing to access any drive.

The 690 also comes with a front e-SATA port so that would really help when copying to the server using SNAP.

The 690 is about $20 more than the 590. Should I just go with the 590 and get a good 5-in-3 or settle for the 690? I'm on the fence here guys and hopefully get this today, so I'm looking forward to your replies..

The major benefit of the 590 is that you can install three drive cages for a total of 12-15 external hot swap drives (the capacity depending on if you use 5-in-3s or 4-in-3s).  The 690 can only hold one of those same trays (and a 3-in-2 if you really want to pack it full).  I personally prefer externally mounted hot swap bays - they cost more up front, but they are so much more convenient.  If don't mind or otherwise prefer internally mounted drives, then the 690 is a good choice.

I agree that if you are going to be using internal drives, the 690's system is far better than the 590's.  However, I think the major benefit of the 590 is its ability to hold several hot swap drive cages.

I went ahead and got the 590. Cant wait!

Raj is the hardware wiz!

Thanks, guys. 90% of what I know I've learned from these forums, from those with far more experience than I.
