August 22, 201015 yr I have a SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM inside a Norco 4020 case and the blue activity light stays on, even when my main page says the disk has been spun down. Is this a problem with the hard drive or is that normal for these hard drives? I have tried switching the drive to a different slot and the light still stays on.
August 25, 201015 yr What is the HDD plugged into? The motherboard, or an add-on card? Some add-on cards don't allow drives to spin down. Usually unRAID recognizes this and won't show the drive as spun down, though, so your case is a bit odd.
August 26, 201015 yr Author it is plugged into the add-in card. Supermicro AOC SAT2-MV8. Should I try moving it to the motherboard port and see if the blue activity light cuts off? Also when I formatted the samsung to add to the array, it came out a little bit bigger then my other 1tb drive, WD1001FALS. Should I remove the drive from the array, plug it into one of my motherboard ports and add it (format it again) to see if it makes a difference?
August 26, 201015 yr it is plugged into the add-in card. Supermicro AOC SAT2-MV8. Should I try moving it to the motherboard port and see if the blue activity light cuts off? Yes, I would try that. Remember to take a screenshot of your devices page before you make any hardware changes, just in case. Also when I formatted the samsung to add to the array, it came out a little bit bigger then my other 1tb drive, WD1001FALS. That sounds like an HPA issue. Do you have a Gigabyte motherboard? Post a syslog and we can tell you if you have HPA issues or not. Should I remove the drive from the array, plug it into one of my motherboard ports and add it (format it again) to see if it makes a difference? No, at at least not yet. Try just moving it to the motherboard port and reassigning it to the correct place on your devices page. As long as you don't assign it to the parity slot your data will still be intact.
August 26, 201015 yr Author I have a supermicro x7sbe motherboard. I moved the hdd to a motherboard port but the light still stays on. I have attached my syslog syslog-2010-08-26.txt
August 26, 201015 yr Yep, you do have an HPA on your FALS drive: Aug 26 12:28:57 Unraid kernel: ata10.00: HPA detected: current 1953523055, native 1953525168 Aug 26 12:28:57 Unraid kernel: ata10.00: ATA-8: WDC WD1001FALS-00J7B0, 05.00K05, max UDMA/133 This means that it will appear to be smaller than a standard 1 TB drive. If you are currently using a Gigabyte motherboard then you should look into potential HPA issues (just search the wiki). If this HPA is from a previous motherboard, then no big deal.
August 26, 201015 yr Author the wd1001fals was previously connected to a gigabyte motherboard, so I guess that is the reason for the hpa. However, so was my WD5000AAKS and it doesn't seem to come up with an HPA. If its not an issue, then thats fine. As for the samsung drive, should I try to rma it or do you think that this isn't that big of a problem? I ran the preclear twice and everything came up fine.
August 26, 201015 yr HPA appearing on only one or a few drives is normal. The motherboard generally only creates an HPA on one drive, but it will create more if that first one can't be located. As long as you are no longer using a Gigabyte motherboard, it is not an issue. I honestly don't know what to say about your Samsung drive. As long as it is actually spinning down (which you have confirmed in the unRAID web page) then I would probably just live with it. But if that little green light really bothers you, then I guess go ahead and RMA it. I'm not sure what you'll tell them, though.
