September 1, 201015 yr ..... or read the drives directly! Hi, I was wondering if anyone can help? I've just completed my Unraid server build and thought everything was going smoothly unfortunately I can't read any files from the disks or shares. I built my server using the suggested components from the wiki then installed Unraid as per the directions. I currently have 2 disks and 1 parity drive. OK, I can see Tower on my network, copy files of any size to the server and I can browse to them and view the properties etc. but can't read files except for very small text files. When I try to play file (a movie or an mp3) or even open a larger text file the browser either hangs and has to be force closed or the media player (VLC, XBMC, etc etc I've tried lots) just returns an error saying it can't open the file. I've run Memtest and that's error free. I've run reiserfsck on the drives and that's error free as well I've tried accessing the server from 2 different Windows 7 machines, one XP and one Linux with much the same result. Does anyone have any suggestions? :'( Thanks, GD I've attached my syslog below: syslog-2010-09-01.txt
September 1, 201015 yr As you suspected, the ethernet link is going up and down. It almost looks as if there is another PC on the lan with the same MAC address, or the same IP address??
September 1, 201015 yr Author Hmmmm... I've reworked the network with only the Unraid server and my main laptop on the network and it's still the same... I even changed to a different router and checked the IP's and MAC addresses - they're all different so that can't be it There was another thread where folks were experiencing similar results and only solved it by disabling the onboard LAN and installing a NIC card, I'll try that in the morning... it's disappointing tho' as the Asus M4A78L-MLE is a recommended mobo. Never mind, NIC's aren't expensive and I really don't want to bin Unraid!
September 1, 201015 yr Author OK, my Unraid server is now fully operational after disabling the onboard LAN and installing a PCI NIC (a Micronet one) . There's obviously some compatability issue with the ASUS M4A78L-M LE motherboard which is specifically listed as being compatible and part of a suggested build...
September 1, 201015 yr OK, my Unraid server is now fully operational after disabling the onboard LAN and installing a PCI NIC (a Micronet one) . There's obviously some compatability issue with the ASUS M4A78L-M LE motherboard which is specifically listed as being compatible and part of a suggested build... Did you by any chance first try booting the unRAID flash drive on another motherboard and PC before moving it to the ASUS M4A78L-M LE?? I ask because at one point the unRAID server would store the MAC address in its config/network.cfg file (as HWADDR=XX.XX.XX.XX.XX ) If that line is there in that file, and is populated with the MAC address of the other PC, and if that PC is on the LAN, then packets of data destined to the other PC would get responded to be both network cards. The solution is simple... delete the HWADDR line from the config/network.cfg file and then reboot. (may have to reboot the router or other PC too so they now know the correct MAC address of the unRAID server) Joe L.
September 1, 201015 yr Author Nope, I only booted it in the new machine. I think there's definitely something about the motherboard LAN it doesn't like, I noticed someone else had exactly the same problem with exactly the same symptoms with that motherboard. Unraid worked prefectly as soon as I'd added the PCI NIC....
