tdegroot96
Unfortunately I cannot try unRAID VMs yet, because I have the 3770k, which doesn't have vt-d support. Because of that, I want to build a new PC. My current PC was built in 2013, so there are a few things that I would like do different now. The things I want to do with unRAID are: Windows 10 (for gaming) Fedora Workstation (software development) NAS VPN Creation of linux servers for whatever I'd like to do. My question now is, what CPU is the best to use? My budget for the CPU is about €500. I looked into Xeon, but they are quite pricey and the sockets are pretty inconvenient too (for motherboard selection). My go-to Intel desktop CPU would be the Intel i7 8700K. It's a 6 core processor with hyperthreading, resulting in 12 threads. What also interests me, is to go for a cheaper alternative: Ryzen Threadripper (v1) with 8 cores and 16 threads. So again, what CPU is the best to use? What are your experiences? What do you suggest? Edited September 29, 2018 by tdegroot96 Quote Link to comment
steto
I'm looking forward to use a AMD ryzen 2700x for my unRaid server. Price: 280€ - 320€ # of CPU Cores: 8 # of Threads: 16 Max Boost Clock: 4.3GHz Base Clock: 3.7GHz (OC up to 4.2GHz) Default TDP / TDP: 105W Tested the CPU with the trial version and everything works fine so far, didn't test the Linux VM and GPU passthrough yet.
