Chassis Fan Connector

Featured Replies

i reported this in another topic, but after looking into this one, i think it deserves it's own topic

at first i used a PCIe graphics card within my unRAID server.

it's fan was seperatly connected to the chassis fan connector on the motherboard (as well as 2 chassis fans).

why? because it had a fan connector, that needed to be plugged in :)

right here everything works.

now that i dont want to use the graphics card with my server and unplugged it, my system acted weird.

- i activated the onboard graphics card and got a SVGA output to my monitor.

- as soon as i unplug the PCIe graphicscard and the chassis fan connector, my onboard SVGA port wont send any signal

- when i plug in the graphics card fan connector into the chassis fan connector, but still have the PCIe unplugged, it still works

- when i plug in the graphics card and unplug the fan from the chassis fan connector, it works, too. (but without the graphics fan of course)

so my problem is:

i really do want to unplug the graphics card, but it seems my system is requiring a chassis fan connected to its board connector as soon as i dont have any PCIe graphics card plugged in.

otherwise, if i plug it back in, it wont check if the chassis fan connector is used.

strange or common because the system expects more cooling then?

temperature of my board/cpu/hdd is around 35-42 °C

anyone any advice or idea?

(AMI BIOS)

Sounds really weird. If you plug one of your other chassis fans onto that connector, will it work?

hard to tell

i plugged in my chassis fan only, but it is only on 2 pins.

the graphics card on the other hand uses a 3pin fan connector. (i guess for RPM control)

with the chassis 2pin fan it wont work

but with the 3pin graphics card fan it does. (even without the card itself.)

The only thing I can think of is to check your bios settings. There is usually some settings for monitoring temps and fan speeds. Maybe try disabling monitoring of fan speeds. I don't think it is able to monitor speeds on 2 wire fans, so that may explain why it isn't able to detect one of your other chassis fans plugged in there. It doesn't make sense to disable onboard video if it can't find a chassis fan plugged in, but who knows.

You named it.

It doesn't makes sense.

Non the less, i have already ordered a beQuiet! chassis fan with 3 pins.

Does the server boot up and work without this fan connected?

That sounds like a BIOS monitoring function shutting down the computer because it does not see the fan working anymore to me too.

i have had the option to set the chassis fan monitor to "disabled"

but now i didnt got any vga picture from my internal graphics device if my PCIe card was outside.

You could also try installing a jumper on the chassis fan connectors to close that circuit.  However, since it is a 3 pin connection, I'm not sure which two pins should be closed off, just try them I guess.
