October 18, 201015 yr I saw a fair amount of reviews at newegg talking about this drive's speed compared to others. One person said it was faster than their WD 1TB Black. Would this Samsung make a good cache drive for a 7 disk Unraid setup. Right now it's made up of.. 2TB (3 WD green) 1.5TB (3 Seagate 7200.11 7200RPM)+(1 WD green). I'm low on cash, but do have some to expand my setup to increase speed. Should I get a good cache drive first, or get a better parity drive first. I'm using one of the 2TB WD greens, right now. From what I've read on the forums a 2TB Hitachi Deskstar seems like my best bet for a new parity drive, but I missed the last sale for $100. So in simple terms... Is this drive a good/best(I know best is relative) cache drive? Or should I just wait till I get a deal on a good 2TB drive to replace my parity?
October 18, 201015 yr Author One of the best explanations of what occurs when a "write" is made to a drive in the unRAID server. Since you already have 5400rpm drives in your array, the writes to those drives will be limited by the speed of the drive, regardless of the parity drive speed. http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=8243.msg79747#msg79747 Depending on what you want to do - increase write speed? Then employing a cache drive would give you the best results. http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=5754.msg54158 Other than a SSD, Raptor, Black drive - the Samsung is a fine cache drive.
October 18, 201015 yr Thank you, for the link. Good point, about 5400RPMs, if I understand it all correctly. Depending on what you want to do - increase write speed? Then employing a cache drive would give you the best results.Yep, I'd like to maximize my write speeds. Eventuallly I'd like to use UnRaid to store my recorded HDTV from my Ceton 4(if it ever ships). It's just that I was a little concerned about 4 HD streams writing to the array, while up to 2 devices could be reading back(up to 2) of the streams. I wanted to be sure UnRaid could handle this, along with my normal usage. Other than a SSD, Raptor, Black drive - the Samsung is a fine cache drive.Got a small SSD(I love it) in my main PC, but worry about life-expentacy being highly shortened, with constantly writing and rewriting data blocks. I don't really have the money for a Raptor or Black, right now, so... I guess I'll grab the Sammy. /thanks justme
