Short stroking the cache drive?

Featured Replies

Just a thought.  Would it be worthwhile to short stroke your cache drive to force it to use only the outer (faster/denser) layers?  Assuming of course that you don't need the full size of the cache drive at any time.  I've read that some traditionally slow drives (such as green drives) can be made to appear much faster if they are limited to use only these outer layers, at the expense of capacity of course.  I figure that the cache drive is a prime candidate for this treatment as the capacity is generally less important than the speed.

However, my counter thought is that since the cache drive is cleared off every 24 hours (by default, at least), that maybe the outer layers are the only ones ever used anyway, and therefore short stroking it wouldn't offer any noticeable benefit.
