December 8, 201015 yr I am relatively new to NAS/Storage servers systems and multiple hard drives. I have a failing disk, my Synology system reports is a "failing disk and recommended to be replaced as soon as possible". (I've since moved all of the data on the Syno over to unRAID) I bought and installed the drive in March. What type of SMART Test results will Samsung accept in order to replace the drive under the 3 year warranty? Anything else I should do in an attempt to "repair" the drive? Are the files I copied over to unRAID damaged already? If so, anything I can do to fix the files? The copy was "successful". If it helps, the syno is setup as Raid-1. Thanks for the help! Edit: Each successive smart test is showing an increasing number of "pending sectors" and "raw read error rate" Other notifications that may be helpful: Hard disk 1 on DiskStation had an I/O error, but it is working properly now after several retries; it may have been caused by bad sectors. If this event appears again, please back up your data and run the S.M.A.R.T. test on your hard drive to examine the hard drive status. DiskStation has finished checking the consistency on System Volume (Root). The system is now ready for use. Sincerely, Synology DiskStation DiskStation has finished checking the consistency on Volume 1. The system is now ready for use. Sincerely, Synology DiskStation
December 10, 201015 yr You have to use Samsung's ES-Tool to run SMART on the drive. This program will give you some sort of output code that you then send to Samsung while you request an RMA. To test the files on your unRAID server, you can run CRC checks (via TeraCopy) or MD5 checks on them against the originals on the Synology (assuming they are still intact).
December 10, 201015 yr Author Thanks Raj for the info. I was hoping to avoid the ES Tool. They are intact (at least the few I attempted to play) total size ~ 1.4TB. Could I check md5 using teracopy command line? I found some basic commands for teracopy CLI but didn't get them to work. I use teracopy and total commander. I'll search around for md5 checks on this site (remember seeing a few references)
December 10, 201015 yr TeraCopy does CRC, not MD5. Similar, but different. Somewhere in the settings you can tell TeraCopy to verify only - this will compare two folders to see if they are the same. There's all kinds of MD5 programs for Windows (for example). You could use something like that instead. You can also run MD5 directly on the unRAID server, but I don't remember how. I would much rather use these GUI options above.
December 10, 201015 yr Author I had been using teracopy for copying only but never found the Teracopy 'verify' option in the main menu. Actually, before your post I never actually knew there was a teracopy "file operations" menu! Thanks a lot... too much ripping time to take any chances.
December 10, 201015 yr Author And while I was typing the previous reply...I get another I/O error on the Syno...Yippee. Glad I have unRAID!!
