Recommendations for a CPU and MOBO

Featured Replies

Hello guys,

i'm trying to build my own NAS and i would like some recommendations on CPU(under 100~ euros), preferably Intel and a motherboard(under 100~ euros) with 6 sata ports.

I'm thinking an i3, i5 or Xeon if i can find here in my country.

Thanks a lot!

B365 chipset motherboards mostly all similar, 6 SATA, 1-2 NVME and usually at least a X4 PCI-E in addition to the X16.

Spend the rest on the best chip you can buy that fits the board. 8XXX or 9XXX

If you want transcoding for Plex or similar, make sure you avoid the 'F' varients which don't have an iGPU.

Be aware that if you buy a CPU without iGPU then you need to buy a discrete graphics card.

Even the I3 8100 4C4T will be decent for NAS / Plex / Docker usage with several users.

CPU's are generally robust, especially the non 'K' varients which aren't likely to have been overclocked or abused so if you see a well priced CPU second hand, then worth grabbing.

i3-8100 is pretty expensive here and is way out off my budget, will Intel g5400 will suffice for a NAS? i don't really want 4k transcoding... and i'll be the only user using the NAS(1080p streaming to tV)

For that purpose, G5400 will be fine and if you go with B365 you'll have a good platform which could last 10 years with a CPU upgrade later.

I have Plex, nzbget, sonarr radarr etc. All running with little impact on server load.
