Install the Unassigned Devices plugin.  This will see devices attached to the server that are not in the array as and unassigned device,  NTFS is supported by Unassigned Devices.

See the above linked thread for a description of Unassigned Devices and its uses.

I have two external USB NTFS drives that I attach to the server from time to time to make backups.  You could also just put them in the server as SATA drives not assigned to the array and they will be seen as Unassigned Devices.  Dev 1 in my screenshot below is a 1TB SSD that I am using as an unassigned device.

Thanks I just found it prior to your posting - I'm slowly getting to grips with this again. Was a steep learning curve before, 1 year down the line it's even more confusing now lol.

In UNRAID, go to the "Tools" menu, then select "New Config".

That should wipe out all previous disk assignments and allow you to reassign drives. It should also tell the OS that these are not UNRAID prepared disks, so it should do a clear on them.

Of course, you can also do a preclear on the disks to ensure they get wiped, but when you start the system after doing a "New Config", that should do the trick.

Thanks, but unfortunately I don't want to clear the disks with the media on them, before I get the opportunity to move them to the array.

Your choices with the NTFS disks and media are 1) - mount them as Unassigned Devices in your unRAID system and copy the data over to unRAID array disks.

    Thanks for the swift response.

This is what I would like to do, but I'm not sure quite how to access the data on the disks, or how to mount them as unassigned. I am sure it is a simple operation, therefore I'm sorry for the dumb questions.

  4. Hi

I previously had an unraid server up and running and decided to move back to a Windows install (my partner was more comfortable with it). Anyway I removed the USB for unraid and re-formatted all the drives from the unraid server to NTFS and populated some of them with media files.

I've now decided to set-up a seperate unraid server again and when I start up using the USB, the details of the previous array are still there and it wants to re-assign the discs previously installed. However some of the discs which are all recognised as xfs - file format, but of course now they're not. I have 2 discs which I can use as blank discs (1 for parity and 1 for data), but the other 3 all have media files which I want to move to the array, but I don't seem to be able to have them recognised as ntfs.

How can I completely erase the array, start completely afresh with a new install and have unRaid recognise the disk format has changed.

  5. Struggling with decreased download speeds while using this docker. I posted on the "General" forum, but so far haven't had any response, other than another user having similar issues.

I recently upgraded to a 1GB internet service and was looking forward to the increase download speeds, however that excitement was tempered when I tested it with SAB. When the download starts the speed immediately ramps up to almost full saturation (1Gb), but just as quickly it reduces and settles to around 200Mbps.

Not certain where to really troubleshoot, but I stopped the unRaid server, booted up in Windows and was able to achieve full bandwidth saturation, downloading using SABnzbd.

    Can you offer any suggestions/solutions

  6. Hi folks

Hope someone can help a newbie with an issue I have. I recently upgraded my Virgin internet to their 1GB sevice. Excited to try out the new speeds I immediately attempted a download using SABnzbd (direct to the Array). To say I was disappointed with the download speeds would be an understatement as they showed little increase from the previous 200Mbps package. This morning I shut down the unRaid server and booted up into windows - and tried the same download and achieved speeds approaching saturation of the line (around 890Mbps). This was done again using SABnzbd.

Is there anything I can do to increase the download speeds on unRaid to mirror those I saw using Windows. I was downloading direct to the array and a this time don't use a cache drive. I do have an ssd drive that could be pressed into service, but I'm loathe to use it without guarantee of success, as it contains my Windows installation and if there is nothing I can do to resolve this I would probably revert back to a windows installation to achieve the increased download speeds.

    Thanks for any help

    Derek

  7. @Frank1940 what you suggested was what was required. For some reason my system was booting incorrectly into Windows, instead of the USB drive. Once I resolved that, everything came back as hoped. Array started and I again have access to my media files - phew. Doubt I will be tinkering again in the future.

    Thanks for your help.

  8. @Frank1940 - thanks for the advice. I realised after I posted that I should be trying to do this from a monitor/screen attached to the server - sorry. I will do that sometime later today, once I get it hooked up.

Thanks for helping out a newbie, it's appreciated.

It should have shutdown the server and  then restarted the server.  When restart was finished, it should have allowed a reconnection to the GUI when the reboot process was finished.

What I would sugest is that you push the power button for a half second and see if the server will shutdown cleanly.  (You can then push  the power button to restart the server if that works.)  If it did not work, then push the power button for about ten seconds.  That will force an unclean shutdown.

Thanks I'll try that just shortly

  10. Unfortuately I can't get into UnRaid to take a screenshot. The button - maybe it wasn't called "reconnect", was at the foot of the "Dashboard" page, where the "stop"/"start" buttons are - coudl it have been a "reset" button - sorry for floundering.

  11. Hi folks

First question and new user. Recently set up a 3 disc array and on Saturday I mistakingly pressed the "reconnection" button. I have been trying to reconnect since then, but continually receive a "the connection has timed out message". Is this something that just takes considerable time to complete?
