  1. Tried downloading the zip file and it finally worked, albeit the download is still slower than normal, but at least it did not timeout. Actually, I suspect with the COVID-19 lockdown, the strain of internet traffic could be the primary reason for the slow download speed. In any case, I did not proceed with the update as the USB drive is showing signs of damage. After backing up the USB drive, then reformatting and copying back the contents, when running "Make_Bootable.bat" I get the error message "The drive is write protected." which it isn't. Googling this msg lead me to suspect the drive is breaking down. Since this drive is in use since 2012, I just ordered new USB drive replacement, and will figure out how to transfer the license when it arrive.
  2. I been trying to update my UnRaid to the latest version, but the webui was basically taking forever. So I tried to download, but the USB Creator timeout. Downloading the zip file is also timing out as well. It seems there might be an issue download from s3.amazonaws.com servers which is region dependent. I am trying to update/download from Asia (Malaysia) and is simply impossible, and I have not found any alternative download locations. Can some point me to an alternative download location that is NOT s3.amazonaws?
  3. This is the first post I see that gets the point! Congratulations. I don't even have an issue with other users coming to Tom's defense, but if they decide that derision and insults are the way to do it, then what is good enough for the goose, it should be good enough for the gander. From that point onwards, it is natural for things to escalate. As ridiculous and juvenile this thread seems to be, it has evolved to a stage where I personally think a lawsuit is not only feasible but necessary. If we take away all the insults or derision, and disregards all the users who complain or the users who complain that other users have the affront to complain, then all that is left is the simple fact that there is pretty much nothing any users can do to get an official response from Limetech. It might be the time for Tom to have a reality check.
  4. First and foremost, U would have thought that rebuttals would be based on facts and logic to keep things from going personal. The above rebuttal however, is based on derision and ridiculing the previous post. In United States, and in most western countries, contract law is similar. When one paid for a product, the seller are obliged to provide necessary and reasonable warranty and service for the product. The biggest weakness in Limetech's argument, as presented by the users here is that only V4.7 is the product, and V5 is beta and therefore not part of the sales contract. However, as I hightlighted previously, Limetech's own web presence indicates otherwise and to fully utilize V5, a registration key is required. Therefore, this indicate that V5, beta or otherwise is part and parcel of the purchase. This is compounded by the fact that V 4.7 is two years old and development has stop for some time, and only the V5 development is active in this forum. Other pertinent facts are that Tom is active as indicated by other recent posts, i.e., someone commenting on good service in getting the registration key when buying unRaid. It would seems that Tom has the time to get paid, but not update users here. Starting a class action suit is really much easier than it seem. The economy outlook in the US today is not good and one thing that US have is lawyers. The main consideration for the lawyer taking this case is whether he or she has a good chance of winning, as their fees will be based on winning the case and the size of the judgement. There are other users that keep suggesting that Limetech is Tom's little side business and it does not earn much. Looking at the number of users here and the price of the product, I suspect otherwise, but the great thing is that a legal suit will lay that fact bare. For the sake of transparency, I would also point out the consequences of a legal suit against Limetech by its users. It is quite likely that Limetech will probably just declare Chapter 11 or close shop if the case proceed or went against it. I say likely, NOT certainty, given that Limetech appear to be a one man operation. The best case scenario would be Tom would be so busy defending the suit that he would have time for nothing else. Here is the funny thing. It is users like squirrellydw who seems to be egging me on and challenging to proceed with the law suit. While I am NOT a lawyer, I have been a plaintiff in a law suit and I certainly know how to hire a lawyer. While Tom by his reticence frustrates me, in retrospect I would not bother even mentioning law suits if it were not for the other users who just manage to piss me off in the right way. I will be in a business trip next week, and once I am back, I will contact my lawyer to have a look to see if it is feasibly to proceed with a law suit. If so, I will provide contact details for other users who might decide to join the class action.
  5. LOL what fantasy world do you live in? Thanks for the laugh! Really? Perhaps I can gather enough like-minded users and make a class action suit against Limetech. We are customers, and we did paid good money. I think we have a reasonable case, and if nothing else, he IS obliged to defend against his accusers in a court of law. How does that sound?
  6. I have not accuse nor imply that you are a "fan-boy". What I am stating is that by cautioning me against getting too "personal" after my post, you show biased towards me, i.e., users that complain, while those that defended Limetech started personal comments way earlier in this thread without any comment from you.
  7. This is akin to asking me, another paying customer to leaving his little play sandbox because he don't like what I say. Then in jonathanm reply on the 31st of October:- Now we are trolls because we complained? No words from the moderators that things are getting personal. Apparently implying that I am a troll is OK, but saying he is a fan-boy is strictly no-no? Instead, anybody who complained regarding this issue has been labelled as spoilt teenagers or trolls. Do go through the entire thread. I am not the only users that complained, and what kind of of response do we get? Is this forum some sort of old-boys club where all the old customers stick together against new customers that complained? What's good for the goose is good for the gander. If the moderators want to swing the axe, swing it both ways.
  8. Look at Jonathanm's reply at post 68 & 69. So basically when users complained, we are ask to go elsewhere and stop bugging Tom, irrespective of the fact that we are actually paying customers. Better yet, he suggest if I am not happy with unRaid, I should write my own software to do the job. In what warped world is that consider reasonable? By suggesting that this kind of comments are "reasonable" while mine is just a "rant", you painted yourself as another fan-boy in this virtual reality of a forum. Irrespective of whether Tom run this as his main or side business, he still runs it as a business, which means he took money for services rendered or goods provided. He is therefore obliged to answer his customers. It is therefore totally irrelevant. It is nice that you are so understanding of what you imagined as his life's situation in your own fantasy world, but still irrelevant.
  9. To address two more points raised by jonathanm regarding my complaint:- 1. Only V4.7 is stable and this is what users paid for. All V5 betas are provided from the wellspring of Lime Technology's goodwill and love for humankind. First problem with this. In Lime's Technology download page, the first download in the latest beta. V4.7 is way down in the list. This imply that Lime Tech recommend to new users to use the latest beta since its is the first most obvious choice in the download page. Nonetheless, this is a bit subjective. The biggest issue? To use unlimited version of V5, i.e., support for more than 3 disks, you need to pay for the registration code. So if you paid to fully activate unRaid V5 beta, where does this leave you as to your status as customer? Did you just paid for 4.7 or did you pay for a beta software? Should anyone have to pay to use beta software? Solution: All betas will are full featured, i.e., full number of disks supported. A time limit can be put on usability of the software, be it one month or one year, which should be the estimated time for release of a new beta or final version. That way, if Tom decides to take another 3 years for release of the final version, who are we to complain, since we are getting the current beta for free? Of course, that means Tom will be out of pocket for everyone who paid and uses UnRaid V5, which leads to the 2nd point. 2. Objective of a business is to earn money. Since there are users who think this should not be the "MAIN" objective, then letting users use free beta should not pose any problem. Yet, Tom decides to maximize his earnings by setting the 3 disks limits on all versions of unRaid, final and beta. I wonder how Tom paid for his family holiday in Hawaii? As well, I cannot find anywhere on Lime Tech's website, forum or wiki as to its status as a not-for-profit organization. Perhaps Lime Tech is a religious organization? Maybe that is why jonathanm feels so evangelical that Lime Tech could do no wrong, and we should just all BELIEVE and have FAITH?
  10. that a very black and white statement that can the objective of a business. but is not so for every business. Precisely. As a one man shop, Tom is perfectly justified in balancing stress vs. income. If he chooses to work less and get paid less, that's his right. If he has determined through long experience that responding to every demanding post here doesn't actually increase his income enough to balance the stress and hassle (even if it's miniscule) then he can make the decision to not communicate publicly until he's ready. I'd rather he spend quality time coding and bring out a product sooner than to have him spend time answering every complaint here. Life is too short to try to please everybody. Are you Tom under another pseudonym? You seem to speak for Tom as though you are him. If that is the case, you should put clearly in Lime Technology's website that what is paid for is only version 4.7 and Lime Technology is under NO obligations whatsoever to support V5 or provide a stable release of V5, now or anytime in the future. AND could I have my money back, since earnings are clearly not an important factor in this business. Once that is done, I will shut up and erase myself from this forum. IF you are not Tom, why is it that you feel the need to defend each and every complaint against Lime Technology. Even the forum moderators understand that customers complain to vent their frustrations, and this forum is pretty much the only avenue to do so "in-house". If customers continue to vent, at least that means they are still customers. It is when they give up that Tom have cause to worry. Yet, your "fan-boy" mentality in defending every slight, imagined or otherwise, only exacerbates the situation. Your stance seems to be that everyone who bought unRaid should tailor their expectations to Tom and Lime Technology, rather than have Tom trying to meet his customer's expectation. You know the problem with that? Nobody seems to know what to expect from Tom,. So now we holding it wrong? One way to make all the complaints stop is to issue a simply directive and that is that users would complain should just to using unRaid and banned permanently from this forum. Go ahead and banned me and every single user that complain in this forum. If you have a solution, like many other volunteers in this forum to help other users with their technical issues, then I imagined that will be more than helpful to Tom and Lime Technology. If you do not have a solution, perhaps like some of the moderators here, make supportive comments and offer encouragement. Even silence would be a better option than dissing every single person that made a complaint.
  11. My final two cents worth... I bought unRaid fairly recently, and the primary factor for my decision was that it supports disk size > 2TB. Basically, that means I never used V4.7 and could not even if I wanted to. I ran trial using the limited version of unRaid and it seems satisfactory, and I checked that the release of the betas was quite regular. However, one of the review sites I researched did mention that unRaid was a "one-man show" and release of new versions was spotty. To be perfectly honest, I am running the latest beta and it is stable so I am quite happy with it. The only reason why I am checking regularly for the "final" version is that I plan to run additional add-on, i.e., Plex server, and would rather ran it on the "final" version, and leave it that. It is also true that it is a psychological reason that a logical one. Some users complained regarding the lack of regular updates on the beta. Some do it as a matter of course, while others adopt sarcasm. There are always going to be arseholes. I use a lot of free software, and in their forums, there are those that nitpicks and complained all the time, usually until the developer give up in disgust. unRaid is not in the category of free software, since money is paid and received. However, complaints or criticisms need NOT go overboard. That being said, there are users here that seems to appoint themselves as guardian archangel of Tom, and defend him and unRaid, often to illogical ends. Moreover, defending unRaid for the sake of defending is self-defeating, as it only escalates and lead to flame war. To run a business, the objective is to earn as much money as possible, and good business practices help toward that objective. Pissing customers off are not logical. With friends like these, who need enemies?
  12. Not always I don't think think Tom is a fool, I think he is comfortable allowing others to fill that role. Telling someone else what to do, or how to do their job when you are not their boss is not usually received well. It's his company, and he's heard all this many times over in the past. You all are wasting your time and energy getting worked up about something you can't control. And I'm wasting my time feeding the trolls. Tom does what he wants. It's the blessing (and curse) of running your own company. If he decides it's more productive to ignore complaints and spend that time fixing issues, that's his call. I am not too sure who the troll in this case, as you seem to take the stance NOBODY has the right to complain. If paying customers cannot or not allowed to complain, then may I ask who has the right?
  13. Since he's been running his business the same way for many years, I would say it's working out just fine for him. If you can do it better, then there is undoubtedly a great deal of money to be made, so I suggest you fill the need and start a company that fits your business model. When you have your software ready, be sure to let us know. Based on the number of complaints here, I'm sure you'll have loads of paying customers. I think I want chicken for dinner...so I better get started on my chicken farm.
  14. I agree with your sentiment. However, I don't empathize with buying beta products under the expectation that it will meet your needs in the future. If you buy Unraid today, it should be for the feature set available in V4.7. If you want to use V5.0, either wait for the final release or accept using buggy software (potentially forever). It's not an ideal situation, but those are the cards. That's one way to look at it, but don't expect this strategy to win new customers or even run a business!
  15. I just paid for UnRaid last month, and one of the reason I decided to purchase was based on the feature set promised in V5. I never used 4.7. So basically I paid for a beta product, with the implication that the final release is imminent. There is two issues that I want to raise:- 1. There are many users here, some old and some new. One should not reference on own case, and judge everybody using the same criteria. In your case, you bought 4.7 and anything else that came afterward you treat as a bonus. That's well and fine, but what about new users who bought because of the promised feature set of 5? We will have different expectations from people that purchase 4.7 and used it for years as the case may be. 2. The next issue is about managing customer's expectations. There is simply a lack of effort to communicate this to the customers. I do not think I am unreasonable, and I rather the final release is delayed than have a buggy release that trashed my data, however, a simple update every week or so to updates customers will go a long way to managing customer's expectations. Tom may be a busy man, but a simple update post should not take more than 15 minutes of his time. I am using Unraid for the past month, and graduated to this because have too many NAS devices, 2 x Synology, 1 X D-Link, 1 X Thecus. Unraid allows me to consolidate all these NAS into one big one and therefore much easier to manage. This will be a product I will recommend to my friends BUT for the software release issues.
