If you go this route, I would personnaly do a parity check before remplacing the drive so to be sure that the data used for the rebuild is good.

?  Isn't a parity check pointless as it will calculate parity using the contents of the failed drive, which is now emulated....using parity.  Kind of like checking to see if the answer in the back of the book is correct using a photocopy of the answer in the back of the book.

  2. Can't speak to the X570 taichi, but I just recently upgraded to a used X370 taichi and it's been great.  stable, overclocked the memory just fine, 10 sata ports (none of which get deactivated when using either of the M2 slots).  Only thing I can't attest to is passthrough, as I'm not running any VM's yet, but i've read others saying it wasn't an issue.  I couldn't justify the new price tag for an X570 version when I came across the $85 used x370.  Pcie 4.0 and 2 less SATA ports for $200 extra.

  3. Looking for some help with the Autofan plugin.  My autofan setup is finally working for the most part and it's no longer shutting off my CPU fan (really problematic, especially since I use a small cooler). Anyways, I have "25" entered in for the "Minimum PWM value", and I'm assuming that means, if the temperatures are all below the low threshold, the fan will spin at it's given rate for a PWM input of 25%.  That doesn't seem to be working as my Low and High hard drive temp thresholds are 30 C and 45 C respectively, but as soon as my temps get into the 20's, my fans shut off.  I'd like to keep my fans running at some minimum to help cool things other than the hard drives (CPU, LSI controller, GPU, MB, etc).

Unrelated, It would be nice to have a little guidance on how to set this up as it isn't intuitive, IMO. There is no "help" if you click the "?" in unraid. It took me quite a while to figure out that the "PWM fan" field isn't unique between PWM controllers. I kept hitting DETECT for each PWM controller (I have 5), and some would come up with one of three /long_path/fan0_input, fan1_input, or fan2_input (ie, 3 fan inputs over 5 PWM controllers, thus some had to be repeated).  Also, my biggest issue is after hitting apply, it keeps going back to "PWM1." That's annoying when you are playing around with the settings, you inevitably end up making changes to 1 when you are meaning to make a change to one of the others past 1, and then wonder why the change didn't do what you thought it would.

Just started a preclear on  2 usb easystores. Its been 2 hours and both say 'starting...' Is this normal?

Doesn't sound like it. Just started 3 preclears (internal drives) and they went from starting to the first step in a few seconds which has always been the case.  Haven't ever done any externals.

  5. I built my unraid server somewhere around 2008.  I got some old hardware (circa 2006) off craigslist for crazy cheap and I still run that hardware today for exactly what you are saying you want to do...a big array of discs  (17 in my server).  Core 2 Duo with a whopping 2 GB of RAM (now considered bare minimum).  Only thing I spent real money on other than drives was the case (to hold tons of drives) and the power supply.  If you aren't planning on running dockers and VMs and such any time soon, i'd save on the guts, only making sure you can support a lot of SATA ports.  If you decide in a few years you want to run more, upgrade the hardware then.  You'll have faster and/or cheaper hardware at that point than if you buy good stuff now only to really put it to use years down the road.  I'm looking at finally updating my hardware to add specific capability.  Glad I didn't invest $$$ in 2008 to just do home file storage/serving for over a decade.

No, the preclear did not take 7 months....my clock got reset when putting in the new drive, and in the meantime, the clock got updated.

Looks good to me unless somone tells me otherwise.

  7. I have a newbie question.  I ran preclear on a new 2 TB western digital (ears with 7+8 jumpered) from the console on the unraid box itself. there are SMART differences listed, but most of the report is off the top of the screen.  are the results written anywhere that I can look at them.  I usually run it from a terminal window on my linux  desktop where I can scroll up, copy/paste, etc.  i don't want to have to run this again.

    thanks,

    c+h

  8. I have tried different YAMJ version and from two identical unRAID systems, the one work and the other don't!

are the two "identical" unRaid systems not really identical in that one has a monitor and one doesn't?  Found a tip in the installation notes for linux:

Thanks to miklos.klaar for this tip: If you are running YAMJ on a linux server with no X11 or monitor (headless) installed you have to add:

    -Djava.awt.headless=true

to the java command line after the java command in MovieJukebox.sh. This will tell java not connect to the X11 server and allow the process to finish.

Changing my moviejukebox.sh file to read:

    java -Djava.awt.headless=true -Xms256m -Xmx1024m -classpath .:./resources:./lib/* com.moviejukebox.MovieJukebox "$@"

    did the trick.

Hope this helps someone else out.  Certainly was frustrating for me.  Just glad to have this setup.  On to getting AEON setup (and some sleep).

    :)

  9. YAMJ version 1660 (version that came with the "unraid yamj" bundle):

    Updating data for: American Psycho
java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: /usr/lib/java/lib/i386/xawt/libmawt.so: libXext.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
    at java.lang.ClassLoader$NativeLibrary.load(Native Method)
    at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadLibrary0(Unknown Source)

YAMJ version 2.0 (1668, newest version) yielded:

    Updating data for: American Psycho
java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: /usr/lib/java/lib/i386/xawt/libmawt.so: libXext.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
    at java.lang.ClassLoader$NativeLibrary.load(Native Method)
    at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadLibrary0(Unknown Source)

YAMJ version 1.9 (1500, newest version) yielded:

    Updating data for: American Psycho
java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: /usr/lib/java/lib/i386/xawt/libmawt.so: libXext.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
    at java.lang.ClassLoader$NativeLibrary.load(Native Method)
    at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadLibrary0(Unknown Source)

Still utterly confused why some people don't get java errors when the libXest.so.6 is not included in the java version in the bundle, or the java version the YAMJ write ups tell me to get.

  10. i'll have to try that.  i noticed that a newer version is available as well, so i'll try rolling forwards and backwards.  I'm just trying to figure out why the same download works for some, but not others, or why for some it throws java errors for missing libraries, and other times it doesn't.  the java files are either there or they aren't.

  11. anyone?  this is very frustrating. Tom?

Have you by chance checked over at the networkedmediatank.com forums?  It may be tough for Tom to support this considering all the various configurations, etc.

you can always use a windows box and get it going for the time being then figure out why your unraid internal issues are happening.  Just a thought...

I have read quite a bit at the nmt forums (been reading there for over a year on various subjects).  I agree this may be hard to support given the various configurations, but this mine is about as stock as you can get.  I have cache_dirs running and the battery backup manager.  I've tried disabling both with no luck.  yamj-rescan just keeps throwing java errors in regards to scraping the images.  Even changed my share name to Movies to mimic the default setup even closer and reinstalled the yamj setup.

I did manage to get the jukebox playing movies on the PCH by changing the line from:

    <playerpath>file:///opt/sybhttpd/localhost.drives/NETWORK_SHARE/TOWER:Movies</playerpath>

(though I had the unraid box's name instead of TOWER)

    to

    <playerpath>file:///opt/sybhttpd/localhost.drives/NETWORK_SHARE/Movies</playerpath>

But none of the images are there, making it a pretty bad jukebox.  :)  It pulls the plot, rating, etc, info from IMBD, but no images.  Or at least it doesn't write the images.

  12. starcat, when yours works properly, does it throw java errors like mine?

also, remember that this program is grabbing information off the internet.  if those sites are having problems, so will we.

mine still throws the errors and doesn't download any images or make a functioning jukebox.  the PCH loads it, but there are no images, and the movies won't play.

    :(

  13. no worries on overwriting any jukebox stuff.  i only have 1 movie in there right now so that it runs quickly.  i created the properties file and got the same error.  added the 2nd batch of settings, and it still didn't work correctly.  the rescan output to the terminal window did say that it was referencing the properties file.

    still puzzled.

  14. even with 2 GB and stopping cache_dirs, it still throws java errors.  this is very frustrating.

  15. I have cache dirs running, unMenu, and a the power management software for my battery backup.  the directory I am scanning has a grand total of 1 movie.  I have 2 GB of ram installed.  is memory really the issue?  I tried running immediately after a reboot, so i wouldn't think it would be a memory leak of any sort.

  16. So missing some of the libraries is ok. Do you get Java errors when running yamj?

i get the same error as you for the ldd and i get errors when running yamj-rescan.  the index.html file and the Jukebox directory get created, but the setup doesn't work right.  none of the jpg's are downloaded and the movies won't play.    I made a specific share called Movies and it still didn't work correctly.

On a side note, in the My_Library.xml, i changed "TOWER" to my unRaid box's name in the following line:

    <playerpath>file:///opt/sybhttpd/localhost.drives/NETWORK_SHARE/TOWER:Movies</playerpath>

does NETWORK_SHARE need to be changed to something else?  Can't say I'm familiar with the path structure
