  1. I actually started playing with Unraid on an old QNAP box, only a 4 bay thing, but i have an 8 Bay disk shelf (also QNAP) that connected over USB3 🤮(planning to take it to the tip as very little use to me), however, unraid saw and mounted the drives as if they were attached locally. But a disk shelf would be the way to go.
  2. Just thought i'd give an update. Found some free software called FreeFileSync, which appears todo eveything that GoodSync was doing for me, but as the name suggests, is free. Still testing but if it goes well, I'll be making a donation to the creator. So I'm guessing this is the best way todo what I've described above, and that getting TrueNAS and UnRaid to play nice just isn't do-able?
  3. Greetings all. This is a bit of a long one, so the TLDR is: New to UnRaid, looking for best method to backup files from TrueNas and Synology boxes to new Unraid backup server. First off, I'm new to UnRaid, but not new to storage. I played with it very briefly some years back before deciding TrueNAS was better for what I needed at the time (4K editing server). Much time has passed, and I have finally found that I DO have a use for UnRaid in my environment, and after playing with it again, am again immensely impressed by its versatility! As a good IT bod, I try to make sure I practice what I preach, and after hearing that QNAP customers got screwed a few months back by Ransomware that go into their devices through a vulnerability in the OS, I decided I needed to update my backup strategy. Currently, i have my Primary server, which is a 24 Bay Chassis running ESX. On that, I have a TrueNAS VM which has 3 HBAs and a 16x card with 4 NVME slots, all PCIE Passthrough'ed to TrueNAS. This forums the core of my network, as TrueNAS provides iSCSI back into ESX over the vSwitch for all my VMs. I then have another server at a friends house in his garage, running Proxmox, with TrueNAS as a VM, again, in charge of the 2 HBAs and 12 drives. This receives nightly ZFS snapshots from my Primary and holds onto the for a year. That gives me peace of mind from Ransomware attacks, accidental deletion and catastrophic hardware failure. (this is an old image, has since had 2 SSDs added plus 4 more drives, and the drives are now connected to HBAs rather than the 10 motherboard Sata ports) For the last few years, thats been close enough to the 3-2-1 backup approach that I felt safe. (3 copies, 2 Medias, 1 offsite). I had 2 copies, 1 offsite. But what occurred to me was that IF TrueNAS was ever compromised, like QNAP was, I could lose both my primary and secondary servers in one hit. (yes I know its incredibly unlikely, but not impossible.) After hearing about the QNAP thing, i decided I wanted a copy of my most important files somewhere else, using something other than TrueNAS. I also had a large number of mixed capacity drives floating about... This is where UnRaid comes in At the moment I have an UnRaid trial running on a Dell R510 V2 (12 Bay + 2 internal 2.5" bays). (top one, bottom one is an 8 Bay R510 V1) I'm I'm Using a VM on my main server with a trial of GoodSync, which is replicating data over at a SMB level (its also grabbing files from my Synology NAS too for good measure). But GoodSync want $30 a year (currently on a trial also). I don't mind paying for UnRaid, as thats a one off cost, but I'm not a fan of anything with yearly subscription. I can't help but think there must be a more elegant solution for backing up my files from TrueNAS to UnRaid? I've seen some Apps in the community store for rsync, snapshots, but so far, struggled to make them work, they look very fiddly. I want something that i can set and forget... Theres where I'm hoping some of you good folk, who have years of experience and insight into this platform can come to my aid. If anyones interested, I can upload some photos of my servers for those of us that enjoy a little server rack action Thanks all!
