  1. Yes, I understand how Unraid parity affects. Is it possible to edit video or photo files stored in unraid server from other computer via LAN connection? Or it is impossible due to speed issue?
  2. Hello All, I am going to update my unraid server (with budget in mind) that currently pretty old: i7 920. The new upgrade will need to be able to serve as RAW photos and videos files storage that I will connect with macbook pro via lan for editing. I need to understand what factor that mostly impact the speed of write/read in the server. Is it CPU, RAM, etc? Regards, Bondul
  3. Please see my ebay listing: http://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-ProLiant-Ultra-MicroServer-Neo-N36L-Unraid-with-3-harddrives-/111488359338? Thank You!
  4. I looked at Win 8 backup/restore option and don't like it. I am trying this instead [ftp=ftp://www.paragon-software.com/home/br-free/]http://www.paragon-software.com/home/br-free/[/ftp] . It lets me save the backup file in the server and give me option to create either cd or tumb drive copy for boot up in case system is failing. Anyone using it before? BW
  5. Okay, I think I need to learn more about W8 itself if there is utility built in to do system restore. Thank You!
  6. I am new on Windows 8 and just got a new laptop with windows 8 installed to replace my aging windows xp machine. It does not come with any CD at all. I am thinking to create a fresh system image and store it in unraid server. Any suggestion what the easiest way to do it? I think I read somewhere that there is free software that can be installed in a thumb drive/cd. It can create image in network storage (in this case would be unraid). In case hard drive in my laptop fails, I just need to replace the hard drive, plug back the thumb drive/cd and run the recovery process from the software to retrieve and copy the image back. Other thing: does the image size have to be as large as the size of hard drive in the laptop or whatever occupied it now? Thank You! BW
  7. I remember now. I used the 2TB Hard drive in windows machine without jumper before. Now I put jumper and using it in unraid. I think I need to upgrade my unraid to 4.7 and remove the jumper. Please confirm. Thanks! BW
  8. My unraid does not want to start. It is version 4.5.4. The 2 TB hd is EARS disk. I put jumper 7/8. Unraid is running on circle. It works find after I unplug the 2TB Hard drive. But I need that drive for my parity. Do you think I should upgrade unraid to ver. 4.7 and remove the jumper? If it does, can I do that and run the initconfig? Regards, BW
  9. Okay. It is the time to forgot the failed disks, reset my unraid server, and move on. I will only go with parity and 4 data (total 5 drives) this time. I bought 2TB WD to replace the parity drive. I think I now what I have to do but need to confirm: type initconfig in root assign my new parity drive and rearrange all the 4 data drives start the array just want to make sure: initconfig will not delete any data in my existing data drives. It only resets the parity drive. Thank You! BW
  10. It seems it will be a waste of money. $2000 is definitely a lot of money for me. Thank You for all the advice! Regards, BW
  11. Seagate give me quote on my parity drive data recovery. It is $2000 and they will not be able to recover 100% of the data. There is possibility it gets worst. I have not respond to them yet. This is the what they say: "Our lab has completed the evaluation of your unit. It has been determined that the unit has internal problems preventing normal operation of the device. Internal problems include but are not limited to; Failure of the read/write heads, media damage, system area corruption, media contamination. Based upon this evaluation, we feel that a recovery may be possible. Our engineered solutions will be applied to this issue in attempts to revive the unit long enough for sector level access. Once achieved, a raw image of all readable content will be made to a shop device. We will analyze and repair the corrupted /invalid/ unreadable file-system components, and finally mount the recovery to determine if some / all of the data you require is intact." This is my question: If seagate can recover only part of the data in the parity drive (I do not know how much), will I still be able to read most of my disk1 information? Thank You! Regards, BW
  12. This topic is related to previous topic: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=10001.0 and I need your opinion. Quick preview: My parity and disk1 are failed. They are both 1.5 TB Seagate Baracuda. This is what I have done: I sent my disk 1 to seagate for data recovery but they cannot recover the data. They mention that the head 0 and 1 are broken. They also mention something else but I do not remember.... So my disk1 is gone. My question: I am planning to send my parity drive to segate for data recovery. Do you think this worth it? If seagate can recover the parity drive and image all data to other 1.5 TB hard drive, will I be able to override unraid and make this as parity and rebuild disk 1? Thank You! BW
  13. Yes, the PCB guys (2 different sources) just told me that swapping PCB won't work. They suspect the problem is the firmware. I got to follow bcbgboy13 direction. I am gathering tools, strength, courages, and a lot of luck now before performing that procedure. I'll let you guys know how it come up. Wish me luck! BW
  14. Do you think I have to go this route or replacing PCB? I am not confidence to do the procedure above. I need help if I have to do it. I am in Mobile, AL area. Thanks! BW
  15. Thank You Joe. I learn this hard way now. Regards, BW
  16. I have 4 sata and 2 pata: Sata: Parity - disk3. Pata: disk 4-5 My flash drive is 2GB I think my parity and disk1 are failed. They make that "click sound" at the beginning and stop. All my other drives are okay. My wife has small home photography company. All data in disk 1 is her archive portfolio. I really need to recover data in disk1. So I can open it with other Linux machine (ubuntu??). I am willing to compensate reasonable cost for this. Remember, we are just a small home business. I am also considering replacing the hd circuit board with this guy now: www.onepcbsolution.com .Do you think this will work? I also can do DIY if you guys can give me direction. Please PM me if you want to give me offer. Regards, BW
  17. I think my hard drives dead. I check the hard drives 1 by 1 with no unraid os plug in to check if the bios recognize the hard drive or not. I connect the each hard drive with working cable with this result: First check - Parity drive: There is click sound, the hard drive then spining. Bios does not recognize it. Is this drive dead? Second check - disk 1: There is click sound, the hard drive then spining. Bios recognizes it as my hard drive (ST_M13FQBL). Bios is showing 0 MB on size. Is this drive dead? If they are dead, is there any way I can get data in disk 1 recovered? I really cannot afford loss the data. Anyone can help? I really need your guys help on this. BW
  18. I used old 4 gb hd long time ago when first build. I was only experimenting with it. and I use this 1.5 TD drive for long time until last time i turn the server off. I do not know why unraid pick up this old drive again not the latest cofiguration??? All my sata drives (disk1 - 3) use ide power connector with converter to sata power. except my parity. It uses the cd power cable (due to my limited knowledge, I thought this is ok). That is what available from my power supply. I guess I need to replace it with better power supply then? I will try to check the bios with no flash drive. Should I try it one by one all I can connect all the drives? BW
  19. Hi Joe, Thank You for the reply. I am ordering power cable for parity now. There is no "computer part" around us. I will contact you back as soon as I get the part. I do not know what is wrong with disk1. It is the original disk (1.5 TB). Disk 1 is the one that has broken connector. As I mentioned on first post. We just moved. Before moved I did clear shutdown. And when I power the server back it shows missing parity and error on disk 1. The server was not energized for about 4 days. Now the server is totally off. I am using 40 conductor cable for cd drive for parity drive. It is wrong??? and ide cable for disk1. It was working great for almost 1 year. I have not check the drives in the bios yet. It is posible the bios lost its memory? Therefore does not recognize my drives? OK. Since I am waiting on my power cable to arrive, what should I do? Should I order another 1.5 TB drive to replace my disk1? Do you think this is power supply error? Should I unplug all the disk and try disk 1 and parity drive one by one if they are recognized by bios? Thanks! BW
  20. OK, I try to start the server again. I think the connector is not the problem on my disk1 because unraid still see it but has error Unraid still not recognize parity disk. I think the problem is bad power supply cable. Because when I swap the cable, unraid recognize it but still showing error. I am getting replacement for it. It looks my harddrives are still okay but there is error in it. I do not know what Attached is my screen capture and syslog. Anyone can help me to fix it? Note: I am aware regarding HPA issue. It used to use Gigabyte MB and now using BIOSTAR A760G M2 This is link for syslog and my screen capture: http://www.arenbyphoto.com/temp/syslog-2011-01-09.txt http://www.arenbyphoto.com/temp/Doc1.docx BW
  21. We just moved and found couple of my seagate 1.5 TB did not works . They are my parity and disk1. They make click sound. Are they really dead? I unplug the connectors and found 1 hd has broken connector (disk1). Don't ask me how it happens I hope this is the problem. I would like to fix it and hope my disk1 back to work and I can recover my parity (by replacing the parity disk). And eventually also replacing disk1. This is the picture of broken connector. www.arenbyphoto.com/temp/hd Any suggestion to fix it? Thank You! BW

    I mean blu-ray disc.
  25. Hi, I am wondering what software you guys using to play blu-ray on windows7. I will connect it to my tv via hdmi. I hear there is no free application that can play blu-ray smoothly. I need to go with win7 since there are some application that only run windows. Regards, BW
