  1. Ha. Eating these words now?

I kept saying "I would invest, but, I know they're gonna drop", all the way from when they spiked from $13 --> $25

I hate myself, I only have .7 bitcoins.

  2. B. How bad is "Hardware ECC Recovered"? I presume it's when the HDD itself fixes corrupt/unreadable data, and, it seems to have jumped a hell of a lot higher during the test.

You are trying to interpret the RAW value for that attribute.  You cannot.  It is not a simple "count" as it is for some others.  Only the manufacturer knows how to interpret the RAW value, and they are not telling.

The NORMALIZED VALUE is 100, and has not changed, and is nowhere near the affiliated failure threshold.  Given only the newest of the smart reports, that looks like a great drive.

    Joe L.

I was looking at the normalized value and then I saw something that made me think not to trust it (This was a few days ago, at the end of the preclear but before badblocks), so I just instantly ignored it when posting this thread.

Now I look back at it, I can't for the life of me remember what caused me to not accept the normalized value, however, it was stupid of me to take the RAW value as a meaningful integer. Thanks again.

  3. Also, this is another drive that finished preclearing overnight. It seems to have a different read value that what it thought it wrote and failed the preclear. Is there anything I can do to attempt to fix it? It's out of warranty so no RMA.

I'd say use it in a "Windows" computer, where an occasional crash or data corruption would never be noticed.  ;)

Unless it is power supply related, there is little else you can do.

    Joe L.

After I precleared the drive ~ 4 more times (Without really checking the logs, I just started another preclear whenver it was down because I was hoping that eventually it'd work) it seems to be working better, here's the new preclear report:-

Currently running badblocks on a three pass, pass one completed without issues.

The only thing that looks bad is "Hardware ECC Recovered".

    Can I ask:-

    A. How trustworthy is this disk considering it was failing before but now working(Excluding ECC)? I know it's hard to tell, but, any insight?

    B. How bad is "Hardware ECC Recovered"? I presume it's when the HDD itself fixes corrupt/unreadable data, and, it seems to have jumped a hell of a lot higher during the test.

  4. If your solution doesn't work and if windows can do a long format then you could try that but I don't think you will get it to format in windows if your solution doesn't clear it.  You could also try badblocks or SpinRite and see if they can recover the drive but I doubt it is a disk surface problem (what they are good for) and more an electronics/cabling/power problem like Joe L said.    I'm betting that even though it was working in windows before either the drive is defective now or you have a cable/power problem.

I've tried with two different sata cables, using both direct connection to MOBO & a raid card.

As for the power cable, I will admit I didn't change that, although, I did take it out and put it back in. DBAN also failed, so, currently doing it in windows (Read the thread I linked above):-

    VT6LfGI.png

I think I'll probably be going to bed soon, so, I'll have to continue the rest of the process tomorrow morn.

  5. It is saying the MBR was not cleared, so I expect 10 failed (that WILL read back the MBR).

But doesn't it wipe the MBR on step 4 & 5? Why is it still corrupt(?)?

No idea - I assume that the write or read of the MBR did not work as expected.  Maybe Joe L. will see this thread and have further insights.

    Found this:-

    http://castyour.net/how-write-zeros-all-sectors-drive-under-linux

Not too sure though if the MBR counts as a sector (Well, it does, it's sector 0. Just not sure if it's ask "accessible" as the other sectors), I hope it does. Wiping it with that to see if it works:-

    2lXtOOL.png

If this also fails, I guess I'll have to go through the annoying process of flopping disks around to get it into a windows build and back again.

@Joe, it seems to fail the second you try to read from it, apparently (From reading threads off this forum) it's a sort of (Not always, but high enough for a few people to make threads about it) common issue when you transfer a disk from windows to unraid.

    EDIT:-

    shred: /dev/sdj: pass 1/1 (000000)...64GiB/2.8TiB 2%
    shred: /dev/sdj: pass 1/1 (000000)...65GiB/2.8TiB 2%
shred: /dev/sdj: error writing at offset 70646452224: No space left on device

I feel as though I screwed something up. I think I'll just download DBAN to another flash drive and unplug all HDDs except this one, I really don't want to bother unscrewing this drive from the drive cage, takes me a good thirty minutes to screw it back in.

    EDIT:-

It was run with command -n, so, how does it know it failed? It shouldn't have read anything back.

EDIT:- It dropped during the test or something, when I tried to restart I got this:-

  7. I just picked up some new drives the other day and was going through the preclear but seem to have hit a snag. The first disk precleared with no problems at all. The second however seems to fail for some reason at either 36% or 37% on the disk pre-read everytime I try to run it. It will just seem to stop reading and the script will no longer update. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

I had a drive like that.  As a last attempt before I RMA'd it I took the drive to a Windows PC and did a long format.  After that completed with no errors I was able to run 3 preclear cycles on it like normal.

SO long story short you could try writing to the drive first by using the '-n' parameter of preclear for a single cycle first.  Then run however many preclear cycles you wanted to run.  That is essentially what I did with a windows long format.

I also have a drive like that (See here), going to try a -n format in a second (Gotta restart the server so the disk starts responding).

Thanks for the tip, I'll update this post with the results in 5 minutes to 24 hours (Depending on if it's obvious it's working or not).

EDIT (Not the results):- I just thought I'd mention the drive that I'm having issues with was working fine in windows just before I transferred it.

    EDIT (Small results):-

    Setup warning (With call functions);-

    GfJjZeD.png

and, holy hell, it seems to be working:-

    RIOld1l.png

Gonna restart this preclear with screen enabled (I didn't bother to set up screen since I doubted it'd work). Thanks dude, I think you just fixed my drive (I was getting ready to send the raid controller back, as I thought it was it not supporting multiple 3TB HDDs or something).

  8. Interesting in that the end-to-end error says FAILING_NOW, but the overall smart status is PASSED.

I would RMA the drive on just that.  Buggy firmware.

Yu can ignore any warnings from the preclear script about fdisk and gpt partitions on drives over 2.2TB.  The GPT partitions are expected, and fdisk is only being used to read the MBR, not partition the disk, so it is safe.

I honestly have no idea how bad an end_to_end error is. If you think it's worth RMAing I will, I just want your opinion post preclear.

  9. I am running a second preclear on the good drive right now and if that passes I am going to run at least one preclear on the rest of the drives I picked up before I request the rma. Hopefully I just got one bad one. Thanks for pointing the reallocating sectors. I didn't notice it when I first looked at the log. I must have not been paying close enough attention. The first drive showed zero reallocated sectors so I am thinking it will probably end up being a good one.

Hopefully it is a good one, but, obviously eventually every drive will fail, just a matter of when.

  10. The last few times I've run

    find -name '*searchterm*'

, most disks are spinning up. I don't recall this happening previously. Any guesses on the cause?

Just a guess, cachedir isn't caching deep enough into your folders? Say you tell it to cache 4 deep and you have a folder tree like:-

    \Disk1\A\b\c\d\e\f

Cachedirs will only scan up to D, so, when 'find' looks in /e and /e/f it'll have to spin up the drives.

  11. Also, this is another drive that finished preclearing overnight. It seems to have a different read value that what it thought it wrote and failed the preclear. Is there anything I can do to attempt to fix it? It's out of warranty so no RMA.

  12. Sorry for asking this again (And I'll probably be asking a few more times) but I like to have a second opinion from someone who knows this stuff more than me.

    <snip>

Other than the read speed, it seems okay to me, but, like I said, I'd rather have a second opinion on this.

Looks like a perfectly fine drive to me.

Only issue, probably in its prior life, are the power off retracts

    192 Power-Off_Retract_Count 0x0032  200  200  000    Old_age  Always      -      284

These were where power was turned off when the disk heads were still loaded.    (apparently you just hit the power switch) however, the normalized value of 200 has not budged, and nowhere near the failure threshold of 0, so no need to worry.

Would this value increase if I had something along the lines of a BSOD? There was a phase where I literally had BSODs every minute, and, I wouldn't be surprised if I racked up at-least 200 in the time it took me to fix it (Which was just saying "Fuck it" and reinstalling windows).

  13. Sorry for asking this again (And I'll probably be asking a few more times) but I like to have a second opinion from someone who knows this stuff more than me.

I've attached the other relevant preclear files to this post.

Hey Joe, not sure if you missed my post, but given the weird results of this preclear, I could use your input :)

    Thanks!

    Sorry, I did miss it.

    This line is weird...

65535 sectors were pending re-allocation after zero of disk in cycle 1 of 1.

I would not expect for sectors to be pending re-allocation after being written.  (and it is the highest count I've ever seen)  Makes me want to RMA the disk for buggy firmware.  (did you perhaps run two pre-clears on it at the same time, with one writing, while another was reading?)

In any case, there were still 47 sectors that it could not re-allocate, and on that I'd RMA the drive.

You should, if you decide to keep the drive put it through at least one more preclear cycle, and if cannot come through with all the sectors re-allocated, and no new ones detected as unreadable, RMA it.

Well, instantly that number calls out to me, 65535 being the maximum number a two byte integer (short) can be, that alone (being exactly 2^16-1) sounds dodgy.

  15. Two questions:-

    A. I have an "End_to_end" error on a drive I'm currently preclearing (Warned me at the start, just started it. Can't do any harm to preclear it). Here's the smart report off unmenu:-

It's still in warranty (and will be for quite a lot longer, ~ 2 years), any advice? Like I said, it's currently preclearing anyway, if it gets any worse I guess that's a good thing (Easier RMA & saved me from data troubles)

    Second thing is:-

WARNING: GPT (GUID Partition Table) detected on '/dev/sdj'! The util fdisk doesn't support GPT. Use GNU Parted.

On both my 3TB HDDs that were previously in my windows build, anything I just do first? Or just preclear them and dump them into the array.

  16. unRAID will look in "event-named" directories under /usr/local/emhttp/plugins/ for an executable script in a "plugin-name/event" directory and invoke it as it stops services prior to un-mounting the disks on array stop

    /usr/local/emhttp/plugins/sanzbd/event/stopping_svcs

You can put something like this in your "config/go" script to move a copy of your script to that location each time you reboot.

    mkdir -p /usr/local/emhttp/plugins/sanzbd/event/

    cp /boot/sabnzbd_shutdown /usr/local/emhttp/plugins/sanzbd/event/stopping_svcs

    chmod +x /usr/local/emhttp/plugins/sanzbd/event/stopping_svcs

The actual plugin name (shown in blue above) does not matter other than do not use directory names with spaces.  You do not need to have a plugin with that name, but it is where the event system looks.

You can put event related files there as needed.  They are invoked in lexical order..  As an example, if you had

    /usr/local/emhttp/plugins/sanzbd/event/stopping_svcs

    /usr/local/emhttp/plugins/01_joe/event/stopping_svcs

    /usr/local/emhttp/plugins/02_joe/event/stopping_svcs

01_joe would invoke first, 02_joe second, and sanzbd third.

The actual /boot/sabnzbd_shutdown file would then have as its contents:

    wget -O - localhost:8081/shutdown?session=blah

One warning.  If any "event" script fails to end, or waits for user input, the entire unRAID shutdown process will stop and wait forever to continue.

To see other potential events look in /usr/local/sbin/emhttp_event

Thanks for this post, exactly what I needed. Also, the reason why I can't use wget is because I've never done any sort of bash formatting (nor do I know any real built in linux commands) before and I need to first use a connection to grab the session from the index page. Something along the lines of:-

    String sessionID = Regex(getPage("localhost:8081"), "var session = \"(.+?)\";", group.one);
    getPage(String.format("localhost:8081/shutdown?session=%s", sessioNID));

Obviously the above isn't real code, but, it gets the point across.

Edit by Joe L. as moderator, to fix example event name to eliminate confusion

  17. Considering the majority of users here download loads of pirated T.V. shows and movies directly to their boxes....

That's quite a sweeping statement.  I am sure that some users do, but to claim that the majority of users do is certainly something of an insult to the many that would never consider doing such a thing.  I am sure you didn't mean to offend, but ...  >:(

"Majority" doesn't mean all, it means most. You're one of the people that do not pirate movies/shows/programs/etc (Which, I find hard to believe that you've never pirated anything).

  18. For international orders of pre-configured flash devices, it costs minimum of $39 because we use Express Mail International which is trackable (Priority Mail International is about $10 less but is not trackable).

I just realized it cuts money into your profits due to the fact the pen-drives are only $10 each (That we pay, no idea about how much you pay. Too lazy to find the model number of the two you shipped me); now I feel bad that I bought the pen-drives off you and not amazon.
