Preclear.sh results - Questions about your results? Post them here.
You are trying to interpret the RAW value for that attribute. You cannot. It is not a simple "count" as it is for some others. Only the manufacturer knows how to interpret the RAW value, and they are not telling. The NORMALIZED VALUE is 100, and has not changed, and is nowhere near the affiliated failure threshold. Given only the newest of the smart reports, that looks like a great drive. Joe L. I was looking at the normalized value and then I saw something that made me think not to trust it (This was a few days ago, at the end of the preclear but before badblocks), so I just instantly ignored it when posting this thread. Now I look back at it, I can't for the life of me remember what caused me to not accept the normalized value, however, it was stupid of me to take the RAW value as a meaningful integer. Thanks again.

I'd say use it in a "Windows" computer, where an occasional crash or data corruption would never be noticed. Unless it is power supply related, there is little else you can do. Joe L. After I precleared the drive ~ 4 more times (Without really checking the logs, I just started another preclear whenver it was down because I was hoping that eventually it'd work) it seems to be working better, here's the new preclear report:- ========================================================================1.13 == invoked as: ./preclear_disk.sh -A -c 3 /dev/sdg == SAMSUNG HD103UJ S13PJ90QC12628 == Disk /dev/sdg has been successfully precleared == with a starting sector of 64 == Ran 3 cycles == == Using :Read block size = 8225280 Bytes == Last Cycle's Pre Read Time : 3:07:16 (89 MB/s) == Last Cycle's Zeroing time : 3:06:29 (89 MB/s) == Last Cycle's Post Read Time : 6:31:06 (42 MB/s) == Last Cycle's Total Time : 9:38:34 == == Total Elapsed Time 32:08:34 == == Disk Start Temperature: 14C == == Current Disk Temperature: 21C, == ============================================================================ ** Changed attributes in files: /tmp/smart_start_sdg /tmp/smart_finish_sdg ATTRIBUTE NEW_VAL OLD_VAL FAILURE_THRESHOLD STATUS RAW_VALUE Airflow_Temperature_Cel = 79 86 0 ok 21 Temperature_Celsius = 78 84 0 ok 22 No SMART attributes are FAILING_NOW 0 sectors were pending re-allocation before the start of the preclear. 0 sectors were pending re-allocation after pre-read in cycle 1 of 3. 0 sectors were pending re-allocation after zero of disk in cycle 1 of 3. 0 sectors were pending re-allocation after post-read in cycle 1 of 3. 0 sectors were pending re-allocation after zero of disk in cycle 2 of 3. 0 sectors were pending re-allocation after post-read in cycle 2 of 3. 0 sectors were pending re-allocation after zero of disk in cycle 3 of 3. 0 sectors are pending re-allocation at the end of the preclear, the number of sectors pending re-allocation did not change. 0 sectors had been re-allocated before the start of the preclear. 0 sectors are re-allocated at the end of the preclear, the number of sectors re-allocated did not change. ============================================================================ Start:- Disk: /dev/sdg smartctl 5.40 2010-10-16 r3189 [i486-slackware-linux-gnu] (local build) Copyright (C) 2002-10 by Bruce Allen, http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net === START OF INFORMATION SECTION === Model Family: SAMSUNG SpinPoint F1 DT series Device Model: SAMSUNG HD103UJ Serial Number: S13PJ90QC12628 Firmware Version: 1AA01113 User Capacity: 1,000,204,886,016 bytes Device is: In smartctl database [for details use: -P show] ATA Version is: 8 ATA Standard is: ATA-8-ACS revision 3b Local Time is: Tue Mar 5 08:57:21 2013 GMT SMART support is: Available - device has SMART capability. The only thing that looks bad is "Hardware ECC Recovered". Can I ask:- A. How trustworthy is this disk considering it was failing before but now working(Excluding ECC)? I know it's hard to tell, but, any insight? B. How bad is "Hardware ECC Recovered"? I presume it's when the HDD itself fixes corrupt/unreadable data, and, it seems to have jumped a hell of a lot higher during the test.

I've tried with two different sata cables, using both direct connection to MOBO & a raid card. As for the power cable, I will admit I didn't change that, although, I did take it out and put it back in. DBAN also failed, so, currently doing it in windows (Read the thread I linked above):- I think I'll probably be going to bed soon, so, I'll have to continue the rest of the process tomorrow morn.

But doesn't it wipe the MBR on step 4 & 5? Why is it still corrupt(?)? No idea - I assume that the write or read of the MBR did not work as expected. Maybe Joe L. will see this thread and have further insights. Found this:- http://castyour.net/how-write-zeros-all-sectors-drive-under-linux Not too sure though if the MBR counts as a sector (Well, it does, it's sector 0. Just not sure if it's ask "accessible" as the other sectors), I hope it does. Wiping it with that to see if it works:- If this also fails, I guess I'll have to go through the annoying process of flopping disks around to get it into a windows build and back again. @Joe, it seems to fail the second you try to read from it, apparently (From reading threads off this forum) it's a sort of (Not always, but high enough for a few people to make threads about it) common issue when you transfer a disk from windows to unraid. EDIT:- shred: /dev/sdj: pass 1/1 (000000)...64GiB/2.8TiB 2% shred: /dev/sdj: pass 1/1 (000000)...65GiB/2.8TiB 2% shred: /dev/sdj: error writing at offset 70646452224: No space left on device I feel as though I screwed something up. I think I'll just download DBAN to another flash drive and unplug all HDDs except this one, I really don't want to bother unscrewing this drive from the drive cage, takes me a good thirty minutes to screw it back in. EDIT:- K, hopefully this works.

Preclear.sh results - Questions about your results? Post them here.
I had a drive like that. As a last attempt before I RMA'd it I took the drive to a Windows PC and did a long format. After that completed with no errors I was able to run 3 preclear cycles on it like normal. SO long story short you could try writing to the drive first by using the '-n' parameter of preclear for a single cycle first. Then run however many preclear cycles you wanted to run. That is essentially what I did with a windows long format. I also have a drive like that (See here), going to try a -n format in a second (Gotta restart the server so the disk starts responding). Thanks for the tip, I'll update this post with the results in 5 minutes to 24 hours (Depending on if it's obvious it's working or not). EDIT (Not the results):- I just thought I'd mention the drive that I'm having issues with was working fine in windows just before I transferred it. EDIT (Small results):- Setup warning (With call functions);- and, holy hell, it seems to be working:- Gonna restart this preclear with screen enabled (I didn't bother to set up screen since I doubted it'd work). Thanks dude, I think you just fixed my drive (I was getting ready to send the raid controller back, as I thought it was it not supporting multiple 3TB HDDs or something).

Okay, RMAing it. By any chance do you know how long they take to send a new drive? I'll be out of the house for a week or two starting next week, so, I might wait to return it.

If you think it's worth RMAing I will, I just want your opinion post preclear.- Preclear.sh results - Questions about your results? Post them here.
Hopefully it is a good one, but, obviously eventually every drive will fail, just a matter of when.- Preclear.sh results - Questions about your results? Post them here.
Yes, at-least, I'd say so. I'd recommend someone else with more knowledge confirm/deny what I think, but, I'd say yes. The "WORST"/normalized value is already pretty low for a drive, let alone a brand new one.- cache_dirs - an attempt to keep directory entries in RAM to prevent disk spin-up
Just a guess, cachedir isn't caching deep enough into your folders? Say you tell it to cache 4 deep and you have a folder tree like:- \Disk1\A\b\c\d\e\f Cachedirs will only scan up to D, so, when 'find' looks in /e and /e/f it'll have to spin up the drives.- Preclear.sh results - Questions about your results? Post them here.
Also, this is another drive that finished preclearing overnight. It seems to have a different read value that what it thought it wrote and failed the preclear. Is there anything I can do to attempt to fix it? It's out of warranty so no RMA. Looks like a perfectly fine drive to me. Only issue, probably in its prior life, are the power off retracts 192 Power-Off_Retract_Count 0x0032 200 200 000 Old_age Always - 284 These were where power was turned off when the disk heads were still loaded. (apparently you just hit the power switch) however, the normalized value of 200 has not budged, and nowhere near the failure threshold of 0, so no need to worry. Would this value increase if I had something along the lines of a BSOD? There was a phase where I literally had BSODs every minute, and, I wouldn't be surprised if I racked up at-least 200 in the time it took me to fix it (Which was just saying "Fuck it" and reinstalling windows).- Preclear.sh results - Questions about your results? Hey Joe, not sure if you missed my post, but given the weird results of this preclear, I could use your input Thanks! Sorry, I did miss it. This line is weird... 65535 sectors were pending re-allocation after zero of disk in cycle 1 of 1. I would not expect for sectors to be pending re-allocation after being written. (and it is the highest count I've ever seen) Makes me want to RMA the disk for buggy firmware. (did you perhaps run two pre-clears on it at the same time, with one writing, while another was reading?) In any case, there were still 47 sectors that it could not re-allocate, and on that I'd RMA the drive. You should, if you decide to keep the drive put it through at least one more preclear cycle, and if cannot come through with all the sectors re-allocated, and no new ones detected as unreadable, RMA it. Well, instantly that number calls out to me, 65535 being the maximum number a two byte integer (short) can be, that alone (being exactly 2^16-1) sounds dodgy.- Preclear.sh results - Questions about your results? Post them here.

Thanks for this post, exactly what I needed. Also, the reason why I can't use wget is because I've never done any sort of bash formatting (nor do I know any real built in linux commands) before and I need to first use a connection to grab the session from the index page. Something along the lines of:- String sessionID = Regex(getPage("localhost:8081"), "var session = \"(.+?)\";", group.one); getPage(String.format("localhost:8081/shutdown?session=%s", sessioNID)); Obviously the above isn't real code, but, it gets the point across. Edit by Joe L. as moderator, to fix example event name to eliminate confusion- Run/Stop an executable upon taking the array online/offline?
Sabnzbd seems to stop my array from shutting down (It just idles on 'syncing filesystems'), if I were to throw together a quick python script to connect to the shutdown page (localhost:8081/shutdown?session=blah) how would I get it execute upon taking the array offline?- Preclear.sh results - Questions about your results? This is not good: Spin_Retry_Count 0x0013 100 100 097 Pre-fail Always - 2 twice (so far) the disk was not able to spin up to speed. Typically, it indicates significant mechanical wear. There is also a lot of hardware error correction taking place. Notice now the normalized value (46) is getting closer to the failure threshold (0) and the "worst" value (14) is very close. 195 Hardware_ECC_Recovered 0x001a 046 014 000 Old_age Always - 146458279 If the spin-retry-count gets higher I'll start taking it as a serious number, but, I've been monitoring these drives for the last 3 months (On my desktop) and it hasn't increased recently, so, for all I know it may have been right as I was placing it in it had a dodgy PSU connection/etc. When I first got this drive I didn't do any real tests on it at-all until ~ 3 months ago. As for the Hardware_ECC, can you explain what that does? Wikipedia just says:- (Vendor specific raw value.) The raw value has different structure for different vendors and is often not meaningful as a decimal number. Only reason why I'm not so eager to take it out of my array is because I obviously no longer have any warrant on it (Had it for 3 years+) so, it's either in my array or being used for nothing. All drives perform hardware error correction. (it is as if they have their own internal way of correcting data, typically by re-reading and comparing internal checksums.) Just keep an eye on the drive. If the normalized numbers start getting closer to their failure threshold, consider moving data off it that might be accessed frequently. I realize it is an older drive, Since it is working, odds are it will work a lot longer. I have two disks in my first unRAID server that are a quite a bit older (over 7 years). I just keep an eye on them too, and so far, they are working perfectly. 9 Power_On_Hours 0x0012 092 092 000 Old_age Always - 62767 and 9 Power_On_Hours 0x0012 092 092 000 Old_age Always - 62488 Interestingly, neither have ever had a sector pending reallocation or re-allocated. (They are IDE and 500Gig. They were the biggest available at the time the server was originally built, and over $300 each... ouch. Times have sure changed.) Joe L. Well, I'll be sure to keep my eye on the S.M.A.R.T. status & parity reports. Thanks for your input.- Preclear.sh results - Questions about your results? Post them here.

Just a note to anyone considering buying the "Xigmatek Elysium", the default 4 by 3 drives are insanely stuck in place, the 4 pin connectors on the fan simply refuse to come out no matter how hard I pull (I may need some pliers soon) and it's also extremely difficult to put drives into the cage (Cut my finger twice so far and I've got 1 screw in) I'm going to be buying some 5 by 3 slide in drive cages now, because, seriously, fuck that shit. EDIT:- Got 4 pin plug out with a pair of tweezers (Stuck them down the back, pulled them open), as from that, excluding the top drive and bottom drive per cage, it was pretty easy. The top/bottom drives however were dodgy to put the screws in because there was metal covering it, you had to use both hands to slowly lower it then drop it and take a gamble it'd land in the hole. - Preclear.sh results - Questions about your results?
