  1. I'm using the same make/model drive as my parity and I can confirm that it should be the exact same size as every other 4TB drive:

    parity WDC_WD40EZRX-00SPEB0_WD-WCC4EF2YL0NZ (sdb) 3907018532 * 4 TB

     

    One reason I wouldn't suggest just moving to a 5/6TB drive is that you may (down the line) run into the same thing once you start adding 5/6TB data drives, unless you fix the underlying cause.

  3. Well the goal is to use virtualized unraid as the storage side of this and I posted in the general/other category. It is a bit off topic but since a lot of people seem to do virtualization of their setups there is always the possibility that someone had done something similar and could point me in the right direction.

     

    Either way, no harm in asking.

  4. I've been debating on and off moving my unraid setup to an ESXi virtualized setup like a lot of people, but haven't really had a good reason to.

     

    However, I have an opportunity to set up a new pc/server system for my family's business.

    My options are either to set them up with 7 desktops and some sort of central server for data storage or, since they need to replace their central server anyways, replace their central server with an X9SCM-iif setup with ESXi and then just run everything on VMs, which in the long run would simplify maintenance, updates, moving to new OSs, backups, etc.

     

    My problem is that I'm having a hard time finding some very basic information (which i'm sure is the result of just googling the wrong things).

     

    Our ideal setup right now would be 1 server with 7 clients across 2 locations, all running Win7.

    Presumably I can figure out installing ESXi itself for local access, but I need some resources on how to set up the remote location securely with a simple method of access (something like wyse thin clients over a vpn). Everything I look up about wyse seems to assume you already have a good idea how to set it up, which is leaving me a little baffled, but I like the concept of having cheap small boxes that can be deployed without buying full PCs.

     

    Anyone have any suggestions or can point me at an obvious resource that would explain how to do this? It seems simple like something a lot of people would have done but i can't find a simple tutorial anywhere.

     

     

  5. I'll throw in my two cents here, too. Your drives are definitely running way too hot. As I recall mine don't get over 40 when running a parity check either. If yours are going north of 70 you have something off.

     

    You say your rear fans are blowing out of the case, are the 120s in the middle blowing to the rear? Do you have your server in a closet or something?

     

    I have basically the same setup and I would panic if I saw a drive top 50, much less 70.

  6. Only comments I have are:

    You really probably don't need the extra seasonic cables as there's a very good chance the power supply will already come with two 3 molex hookups and worst case (if you decide you do need them) you'll be able to hook up 5 of the backplanes (20 drives worth) while you order the cables.

     

    And I really suggest against the 7 splitter power cable as everything I've heard is that it's nothing but trouble. There's no magic reason why it should work better than using your modular cables and quite a few why it will be worse (or cause problems).

     

    Also, make sure that the Noctua fans you're getting are PWM if you want to use that.

    I got 2 of the 6 pin to three molex power cables.

    Note that there is 2 versions of this cable, the flat black one (newer) and the round one with colored wires (older).

     

    Some of the older/newer cables are not compatible between power supply revisions, but the molex cable is the same for older and newer power supplies.

     

    I think the older cables are longer than the new ones but your power supply is so close that it won't really matter.

     

    For reasons that aren't entirely clear to me it looks like I ordered 4 of the cables. Wonder why I did that.

     

    The cables are really pretty cheap from btos ($5 each). Depending on which cable type your power supply comes with and whether you want your cables to match, you'll need at least one 3 molex cable (the 850x (ss-850km3) and 860xp2 comes with a 3 and 2 pin cable. The newer 850x (ss-850km) looks like it comes with a 3, 3, and 2).

    You may not need all those power splitters (people have mentioned that the norco ones are less than stellar). Connecting both power hookups on the backplane to one power supply doesn't add any benefit and my 4224s backplane did not even have the double hookups.

     

    Depending on what cables the power supply comes with you may be able to hook it up straight out of the box. I ordered a couple longer seasonic replacement cables for mine.

  9. I did have to resort to one SATA power splitter because the SS-520FL2 strangely comes with one 3-plug SATA cable and one 2-plug SATA cable; not enough to service the 6 SATA power receptacles of the drive backplanes.

     

    I assume you actually mean peripheral cables, since the 4224 uses molex, not sata power connectors.

     

    My SS-860XP2 also didn't come with enough 4-pin hookups so I contacted seasonic. No free cables, but they directed me to

    who supplied me with additional cables at a very reasonable price.

     

    They have both the old style (colored wires with nylon wrapping) and new style (flat black) cables. Some of the cables are slightly different between power supplies, but the molex ones are interchangable, if you happen to prefer one style over the other.

     

    And just to stay on topic, according to my UPS my server (8 WD Green drives) uses about 100W of power with all drives spun down, 160 during parity check. Yeah, the power supply I got is a bit overkill. :P

  10. I purchased a new 4224 and while hooking it up realized that the backplanes only have 1 power connector each, unlike the earlier models which had 2.

     

    I've tried looking into this to see if anyone else has one of these, but I can't find any pictures of any backplanes with anything except 2 power connectors.

     

    Anyone seen anything like this before?

     

    It's not hurting anything since I don't have redundant power supplies, just thought it was odd. The boards are dated 2013 26

  11. So, i needed more space in my server...plus with a non-modular power supply and nothing even close to hot swap bays, putting in hard drives was a huge pain.

    So i decided to get a Norco 4224. In order to save some money, I didn't buy the SAS expander card, figuring that a M1015 plus two reverse breakout cables would last me for 16 drives total.

     

    However, I didn't anticipate that the reverse breakout cables wouldn't reach the last 2 sata connectors on my motherboard.

    Given that it's movie night (yeah, a bad time to do server upgrades) I was in a panic and about to post here, on CL, run to microcenter, and call the local system builders etc looking for sata extension cables and probably paying a premium to get them immediately rather than ordering the $0.79 cables from monoprice.

     

    Then I had a flash of insight...there's no reason the last 2 drives need to be in the case....

     

    Cue my ghetto 4224 with a nice hood ornament. xD

    Edit: Well, my SAS cables from monoprice came in earlier than expected so now I'm running 6 drives off the mobo and 2 off the m1015 and was able to close the case. I'll hook the rest up right when the other 2 cables come in.

  12. Good morning

     

    I have an m1015 that I purchased as a server pull. Attempting to use it in my unraid server isn't working. I see no bios for the card on booting, it is unrecognized when flashing, and I see no LEDs on the card when its plugged in an powered on

     

    While I'm aware that flashing it is hit or miss, I assume the card should at least be recognized and light up in most any mobo

     

    My unraid server is an asrock 890fx deluxe5 (pcie2 x16, x16, x4. All x16 form factor).

     

    I've also tried it in my desktop which has a single x16 pcie1 slot. No dice in either.

     

    I've already requested a return, but still have time to test options. Unfortunately my access to hardware is limited. :/

     

    Any suggestions?

     

     

     

     

    On the plus side I have discovered that my old 3dfx voodoo rush and stealth 64 cards both work.  Lousy motherboard with only 1 pcie slot. Lol. Those are some classic video cards. :3
