  1. Just a small note cuz i fell the need to explain myself a little: - I'm aware that ADS data can and has been demonstrated to me as a means to hiding data and bypassing antivirus software. what i'm suggesting and requesting is a better method of transferring data cleanly. my current method of mapping the drives through it's local ip address and using windows explorer is tedious, and a direct file transfer that circumvents the process of stripping ADS data just seems a little risky.
  2. Here's what I know. A good number of users have seen this system limitation 0x80070299 error. I finally experienced it and investigated a few variables. it happens for large and small files. from Mp3s all the way up to large documents or video files that are 900mb (in my experience) it's definitely not an issue with the drive space you're transferring it to. and it happens mostly to windows users. my unraid system is currently using XFS, and windows is on NTFS. Based on some checking it seems to have a lot to do with ADS or Alternate Data Streams embedded into the files. Solution 1: the Idiot idea so here's what my best guess is happening: windows isn't handling the transfer correctly due to the added information embedded into the file. a odd brute force way to work around backing something up was to actually zip up the file, transfer that zipped file, then unzip it after the transfer. but that's an insane workaround. Solution 2: the better choice. There's software by microsoft called streams. (i think it's By Mark Russinovich. I'd link it directly but i'm not sure about the rules in the forum yet) It's a program that you need to run on the command prompt or cmd. It strips all the data off the file attached to it. basically it removes the info on the file saying "this came from the internet" A few things to note. It comes as a zip file. after you extract it, it's easier to keep the extracted folder in a directory you can access. e.g. C:\ How To use: assuming you already got the streams version 1.6 (that's as of writing this), and extracted it to your C:\ open your cmd. [win key + r] --> type cmd. enter. in terminal. type cd\ this brings you to C:\ type cd streams this brings you to the folder where the streams application is. Note: for the sake my example and sanity cuz i was stripping multiple files of the ADS, I put it in a folder called Stuff. it was going to be copied to my NAS anyway and this was temporary. enter the command streams -d -s "C:\Stuff" <-- note this was the name of my folder. the -d removes the ADS the -s is used for when you're stripping multiple files of the ADS data. I had about 400 of them. A question I'd like to ask and cuz i'm a little paranoid. wouldn't this ADS bit of data be a security risk if a malicious actor decided to embed information into it? given that unraid community is migrating to zfs or xfs, it would be great if someone could point me in the right direction for more effectively transferring files without this microsoft nonsense. I hope it helps and thanks.
  3. Hi, I've just started barely over a year ago. Just wanted to share some thoughts and perhaps you guys could chime in on your thoughts on upgrading. At best I'd say I'm a casual user that's barely scratched the surface of really utilizing my NAS. Currently using a rather old gaming laptop hand-me-down as tower and I've started to consider upgrading for 2 reasons. I went into exploring the idea of unraid purely out of curiousity (since i had an extra machine laying around) and well the premise sold me. About a day or so ago - i've gotten those rabbit-hole zoomies of wanting to tinker with a current project. A bit of context. My current usage of the NAS is kind of all over the place if i'm being honest. Backups - clearly. I honestly got a bit intimidated with the whole parity and pool thing when i started out and never got around to have redundancies (honesty never really needed it). General long term storage for stuff I don't regularly need on my desktop / phone unless i'm access a project that needs those files. Movie storage; went full Jellyfin + remote access via website so i can remotely stream it anywhere. <-- this is by far my most favorite use of it. My access to the unraid generally is through basically 1 of 3-4 ways in general. If i'm at my desktop - Via lan cable. If say i'm out and about - (either at work, or at a friend's house); I use tailscale to connect with my laptop. If say i'm at home and care to watch a movie on a tablet / device; I use jellyfin using local wifi. if i'm watching a show at a friend's house or they want to watch with me remotely, we use a domain i setup so that they can access the Nas through Jellyfin remotely. Now i'm not a power user that needs to run virtual machines or anything, but I am open to expanding how I use the NAS. A few considerations on upgrading. I don't really care to build a brand new tower, but I also don't really want to keep relying on old laptops to run my NAS so i've considered looking into a ugreen device. that (DH4300 PLUS / DXP4300) models. I recently learned that you can change it's boot priority from it's standard booting system of ugreen to the unraid itself. So the big plus on this (in theory) is that the shenanigans i've been doing on my current tower can still continue. Remote streaming, remote access using tailscale, etc. but then i realized - I have 2.5" HDDs, so that might be a bit of a yikes. My friends and I enjoy our little private movie site style experience a lot and a few of them are willing to contribute HDDs for our movies and possibly some personal storage. Here's the big butt of it all, and why i'm a bit hesitant. I'm not entirely sure how I'll be able to transfer my current files into the new nas. like is it something as simple as overriding the ugreen device with CTRL+F12, booting my current usb with the key and such after transferring the HDDs? or is this going to be one of those, you need to buy another USB and purchase another unraid key? (again, sorry if this seems like a basic question, this has always felt like it's beyond my depth) When we tried remote transfers via tailscale to let them keep their files backups, it was so slow like 1-1.2mbps slow. I do have decent ISP speeds of 50GBps for both up and down, and my current tower is ancient (so i'm pretty sure it's a limitation of my current old machine). Supposedly it'll get better with the upgrade but keep in mind, i'm a bit of an idiot and still don't understand the use of the different categories of drives. The DH4300 seems to only have a 4 HDD bay, the DXP4300 seems to have more power and compatibility with NVMEs. So now i'm not sure if you can tell but I hate throwing away old tech just cuz they're old and want to keep them fully utilized. On the uses and other neat things you could do with unraid, do you guys have any suggestions? an interest of ours is actually linking icloud devices as backups (some of them have iphones); still not sure if rclone is the best solution (we're still not certain if setting it up remotely is a thing). compiling all of our blurays and movies into a full on shared collection. and maybe possibly figuring out a way to remotely store ROMs for our emulators. On the upgrading idea, do you guys have any thoughts / experience on this? Sharing experience aside, just wanted to say thanks in advance!
