Consulting on new build - Mixed use of virtualization, media hosting, backups, and crypto
Hello! I'm interested in building a large server to support my home lab requirements - - Running multiple VMs, some Linux, some Windows, some of them are running with a lot of resources. - 2 GPUs - 1x 4090 to create crypto plots + old GPU to passthrough to a Windows VM - Use mixed type of disks on separate pools (NVMe / SSD for VMs, 1st HDD array for crypto plots, 2nd HDD array for media with some caching), I want to utilize many 6TB NAS drives that I have + 3 NVMe + a few SATA SSDs) - Store backups, video files, photos in a secure way with remote backup - Keep things simple yet flexible when it comes to running VMs, containers, and media - Run OPNSense as my home FW The HW that I purchased: Case - Fractal Design Define 7 XL + 10 HDD bays MOBO - Supermicro H12SSL-NT + additional SlimSAS -> 8 SATA cables CPU - EPYC 7532 RAM - 256GB DDR4 ECC-REG HBA (no need at the moment) - LSI 9240-8i IT Mode + cables Additional NIC for 10G copper - Intel X540-T2 Main GPU - Gigabyte 4090 Secondary GPU (already have it) - NVIDIA P600 PSU - Seasonic PRIME TX-1600 My thoughts ordering the parts was I wanted to create a platform I can upgrade for years to come with relatively cheap hardware (EPYC 7002 CPU was purchased from ebay for a fraction of the cost of new). I was a long time user of QNAP, a year ago moved to Proxmox + QNAP (Proxmox for VMs and Containers and some local storage for VMs, QNAP for media and backups). I've played with Unraid for a couple of days now and I'm having some issues that worries me - - Seems like VMs on Unraid are a bit overlooked, no snapshots, no cloning, no visualizations. I probably miss something, but that's what I got from a couple of days. - At least with the default options I played with, it seems like Unraid tries to "push" for a single array without the ability to create separate arrays for different needs and disk types. - PCI passthrough can solve some of my networking requirements, but I couldn't find any "vswitch" configuration in plain sight I'm not in the final stages of choosing "the right tool for the job". Help me get over my concerns with Unraid I'll be happy to hear your thoughts about my build and my requirements. Thank you 🙏
