Problem: I’ve simultaneously lost 6 out of 10 data hard drives and need advice/help on best way to recover as much lost data as possible please.
What Happened: I was in the process of upgrading hardware in my UnRaid server and the new power supply was apparently bad out of the box. It appears to have fried the new motherboard, the Unraid license USB stick, and 6 out of 10 data hard drives. The cache drive was also lost, but the parity drive was not damaged. The damaged HDDs won’t spin up and are not recognized by Unraid or any other computer.
I still have the old 2 TB drives I used in my previous server before the last upgrade. My older Unraid server had 24 drives, most of which were 2 TB in size. My current system has 10 data, 1 parity, and a 1 TB SSD cache.
System before failed upgrade:
· Rosewill 4U Server Chassis 11 Bay Server Case 8X 3.5 + 3X 5.25 HDD, ATX, Rackmount Server Case
· Supermicro X10DL7F Micro ATX Server Motherboard
· Intel Xeon E3-1241 V3 Haswell 3.5 GHz 8MB LGA 1150 Processor
· Crucial 16 GB (2x 8GB) DDR3L Memory
· 12TB Parity Sata
· 1 TB SSD Cache
· 10 data SATA drives ranging in size from 12 TB to 6 TB
Temporary Step: I’ve put the old motherboard and power supply back in the sytem (see system configuration above “before failed upgrade”) and purchased 6 new hard drives which arrive today. I purchased a new USB stick and transferred the Unraid license. My server will start up and I can get into Unraid, but I can’t start the array with so many drives missing. I have deliberately not done anything else till I figure out best options to recover what data I can.
Desire: I have not done anything other than make sure Unraid starts and I can get to the dashboard. The array will not start with so many drives missing.
1. I need to get the array restarted and mount my remaining 4 good data drives and set up a new cache drive.
2. Determine if there is any way to recover lost data from the good parity drive? I strongly suspect the answer is no
3. add the new purchased drives into the array to bring me back to 10 data drives.
4. I’m hoping to use “unassigned devices” and plug each of the old 2 TB drives in from my old system and recover data from them if possible??
