  1. oh ok so it does create a "raid 5/6" type of situation. Then maybe i will just use the standard array system if that is the case.
  2. right but is it creating a drive redundancy with the parity drives? so if 1 drive fails no data is lost ? and with 2 parity drives you can loose 2 drives before data is lost?
  3. ok my understanding has greatly improved thank you. one more question. how does the parity or dual parity work in the "standard" array part of unraid? i have 6 x 12tb drives how would that work if i plugged them all into the array section how much storage would that give me ? is it similar to raid 5 or raid 6 if used a dual parity? thats the last part that i am not completely sure about.
  4. ok that i am understanding but if i want the affect of the fast write speeds can i just add the single nvme drive to the array as a stand alone then right to array and secondary would be the large zfs pool. then set it to array -> cache (pool) would that be a way around the lack of ability to do pool -> pool?
  5. so if a pool array cant use a cache drive, what type of setup should i run? I thought i understood how unraid worked but now im just falling down a rabit hole more confused.
  6. also with using zfs pools can i still have a nvme drive as the real raids cashe drive? So the mover would move from cache pool to zfs array pool?
  7. ok makes more sense now. should i do a config reset or can i just fix the couple of mistakes i made? I only installed plex and nvidia plugins atm.
  8. So any size type of drive can be used for this? ssd or mechanical? What would this drive serve as purpose? just a fill doing nothing ? Then the actuall zfs pool would store all my media and data?
  9. so i just finished building my new server. it has 12 hot swap drive bays. I will be only using 6 to start. with 12tb drives waiting for 2 more to come in before i can completely get it up and running. I was planning on using zfs in a z2 (raid 6) format. and that was going to be my 1st array and then down the road use the other 6 bays to create another z2 array. when i needed more storage. but i just read that you can only have 1 main array? I really dont want to buy 6 more drives as i dont need that space at the moment. would a 6 drive pool in zfs r2 act the same way as the main array? what would possibly be a better course of action to start my main array with future expandability. I am looking at raid 6 type were i can loose 2 drives without loosing data. also second question. i am 2 nvme drives for cache. 1 x 1tb will be for main array and a 2nd 500gb i want the 500gb to be for my dockers / plex meta data. i have 2x250gb ssd in the case that i would like for the 500gb to back its data up to and i am not sure how to set that up.
  10. ok cool thats not expensive. Ill probably just grab a p400 and toss the 980 in the trash. will i see any real performance difference if i went with the T400 in stead of the P400?
  11. really? Will it handle 1080p? What would be a cheap card that can handle 4k ?
  12. I am in the process of building a new server. Current server is an older xeon running windows server 2012 R2, using a hardware raid card. since that is now full on storage i decided it was time to update instead of just throwing more drives in and creating another array. I was going to go truenas scale but leaning towards unraid after watching bunch of youtube vids. Server is primarily for plex and just general storage. have a nice library of about 1200 movies and growing. I plan on transferring all data off old server onto new to remove the raid card and swap with a LSI card to restart that machine as a secondary truenas / unraid machine. the below list is the hardware i am using on new build and my intensions. but need advice on how to set up cache and spare ssd's if needed. CPU - amd 5600x ram - 64gb ecc GPU - nvidia 980 (for transcoding) MB - asus prime 550-plus Storage card - LSi 9300 main storage - 6 x 12tb (going to use ZFS R2) (raid 6) ssd - 1 x 500gb nvme (could buy another if needed) (cache drive) MB has 2x nvm2 slots ssd - 2 x 500gb (2.5 drives just laying around if needed) My question is with the above hardware of if i need to purchase more how should i set up to be as optimal as possible? the cache drive stuff has me confused. again mainly used for plex and home storage.
