Considering Unraid for a workstation/gaming/simracing rig - Do I need 2 GPUs?
Hello forum! First timer here. I was unsure whether posting in this category or in the Lounge, so eeny meeny miny moe decided. I am considering Unraid for crafting a setup that would kind-of fit what I'm looking for. Before dual-booting my existing PC and have a go with the trial version, I was thinking that maybe somebody here could clarify whether the thing I was thinking would make sense, or perhaps confirm some points which could give me a head start (and fewer headaches). I currently have 4 screens, 3 for my desktop (the table) and one ultrawide screen for simracing. It's currently kind of a mess, because every time I launch a game in the simracing screen I have to switch between the desktop area and the sim area because Windows somehow can remember where some windows were in a display and simultaneously can't remember where some other modal windows were. Now, it's annoying, but I can live with it. However, I've been wanting to have a home server with a NAS and containers and Unraid is simply perfect for that, so I was hoping that this OS could also help me with this thing. I was thinking that maybe I could: put the simracing rig on another room using a DisplayPort cable (fibre optic?), which could be useful if I wanted to extend the rig to a triple screen setup using daisy-chaining. And a big fat USB cable that can handle all peripherals. And run one Windows VM exclusively for simracing. keep my PC as it is with the 3 displays. So in the future it could be 6 or 8 displays in different rooms. And run another Windows or Linux VMs. Use peripherals natively. That is, not through the WebGUI but using the keyboard, mouse and displays like if it was running as a host machine. Judging by what I've seen on YT videos showcasing Unraid, I think it should run without latencies or anything if the hardware is okay, but it wouldn't hurt to confirm this point as well. But since I could be gaming on a Windows VM on the desktop, and then decide to race a bit on the other Windows VM on the simrig, and I assume that both of them would need PCI GPU passthrough, I'm not too sure whether the GPU drivers would get too crazy if I paused one VM and resumed another VM even though I would make sure that one VM only has the GPU at a certain time. I will have a couple of Linux VMs as well, but those would not be an issue because I could use the virtual GPU of the integrated CPU graphics. And hence the title: Do I need to purchase another GPU? It would have to be a decent GPU which is expensive, but still less than a whole another PC with Unraid. I think that sums it up. I hope that my points are clear enough, because it's still a big mess of doubts and ideas inside my mind. Thanks beforehand for shedding some light on my (unusual?) use case. Or maybe it isn't that unusual and someone may find whatever discussed here helpful, who knows. Regards.
