I have had a mini pc + DAS setup for a while now and it has worked great (Literally never ever experienced any problems with the USB connection and always had expected speeds of 260+MB/s with my Exos drives). Because i bought enterprise drives my thinking was "This will last a couple of years without dying on me", and it did, still going strong. It has been a couple of years though with them spinning 24/7 and being used for at least a couple hours a day for media playback (plex server), so i am thinking about building a new machine solely to move to unRAID.
When researching though i saw a bunch of people even on here saying they ran their setup over a USB DAS of some sort. Idk, while i had no problems whatsoever on windows, i am afraid that when i am building parity or when a drive actually does die and i get to rebuilding, that the USB connection might be a failure point. Have any of you successfully rebuilt a 18-22TB drive solely off of a USB connection?
I have the ICY BOX IB-3805-C31 DAS running over USB-C 3.1 Gen 2, although a USB-C to USB-A cable was also in the box. Just FYI
