  1. Super Thanks Hoopster. Anytime I put a HDD in different SATA port, it was when replacing a bad drive and the new one was empty to begin with. Never moved a drive that was part of the array.
  2. I'm a long time unRaid user, but never did this exact process. I just built a new server (JONSBO N3 case). The backplane is wired to match the SATA number on the MB. The HDD in #2 slot run a few degrees hotter than the other drives. I've taped up all the front and side vents except the bottom to have the most air pull over the hard disks. Drive #1 often sends me warnings at the 45C. Parity in slot #1 Disk 1 in slot #2 Disk 2 on slot #3 Question: Can I pull the disk from slot #2, put it into slot #5, and boot without any data loss/rebuild issues? Basically, have an empty slot between the 3 drives for better cooling. Many thanks!
  3. I added the ORICO M.2 6 x SATA Adapter which will give me a total of 10 with the MB. Case only supports 8 bays, but it should work. With the feedback I looking at 3 (to start) Seagate IronWolf Pro 8TB NAS Hard Drive. They do not use the slower SMR technology. Does the latest unRAID have what is needed to encrypt the entire server or do I need to install cryptsetup? Would I encrypt the parity drive?
  4. Thank You. I have updated the original post motherboard. I cannot find one with 8 sata ports. Is there an card adapter to increase the SATA ports?
  5. Running a very custom scripted unRaid v4.7 for over a decade. I'm ready to build a new one. I do not need all the services I have. Basic requirements is minimal 16TB (max 20TB) data space and full server encryption. I'm UNIX savvy. Parts list below. I went with the [more than needed] 8 bay Jonsbo N3 over the 5 bay N2 because I the design has better ventilation for fans. I found a MoBo with 8 SATA ports to match the available ports. Many thanks for feedback. I have not kept up with unRaid developments. Questions What is are the steps for a full server encryption on the latest unRaid version? Debating on using (3) 8TB drives or (5) 4TB drives for this build. Cost wise 8TB is cheaper. Any downsides to 8TB drives? Only gripe about Jonsbo is how the HDDs are held in by friction. Would prefer using a HDD cage. I researched, but it seems the best cost effective case. Any case suggestions are helpful.
