In the end I had to: Unplug and replug the power supplies on th ds4246. This resolved the shelf amber warning light. Then none of the disk lights were illuminated, so I had to take all drives (8) from the trays and try each one in order in different trays. Turns out there's a knack, and you have to kind of position them towards the business end of the tray, push gently then give it a good shove at the end, to get it to "connect". Eventually all of the disks were accepted and recoginised by the shelf, and in turn by unraid. I flashed the firmware of the LSI to p20 in the process (to eliminate that possibility). So, thanks for help and looking ladies and gents, both here, and all over this board, I appreciate it. I can't really mark anything as a solution other than "persistence" here though. What a learning curve, but what a deep satisfaction when all those drives were available to assign in unraid. No doubt there'll be more questions from me in the future. Peace!

And there are no lights on the disk trays in the netapp ds4246, so I now suspect that it's not addressing the disks I've put in there. I guess I'll have to try some other disks once I have some to try. (They're all SAS 14tb wd, which my reading up led me to believe would work like this.) More money

Ooh, movement. I undid and replugged everything and now the syslog does show the netapp device, but I don't have any scsi drives in the list tower-diagnostics-20241004-1904.zip

I've seen lots of posts, I've been trying to read and understand what might be happening, but I'm running aground. I've just setup a new server and got unraid os working fine, I added the HBA card ok into that setup. Unraid sees this PCIE device Serial Attached SCSI controller: Broadcom / LSI SAS2308 PCI-Express Fusion-MPT SAS-2 (rev 05) (I am wondering if this card is not properly set to it mode? How would I check?) I was finishing out adding the second hand ds4246 and 8 14tb sas disks in there, which I've now done, powered up, connected the shelf using one of the IOM ports (the one with the square) to the HBA card, but unraid won't see any SCSI disks there, and I'm stuck. I've used the correct cable as far as I am aware - (External SAS Cable QSFP SFF-8436 to SFF-8088 SAS Cable) The shelf does show an amber warning light for the shelf itself, so it may be that maybe? I powered everything up like this. Everything off. Everything connected. Shelf on - wait 5 Server on - log in Check system devices (shows HBA card but no SCSI drives) Check syslog - no mention of netapp in there I've tried changing cables, ports on the HBA, ports on the DS, nothing.
