Hello,
i've build a NAS and decided unraid should be the way to go for me.
But i have a hard time setting things up the way i want.
Iam a windows admin and as it seems my brain is hardcoded in a way that i cant understand what the
heck iam doing / should do when it comes to unraid and its underlaying linux system.
The more i read guides: Wiki, videos (Alientech, Spaceinvaderone) or forum discussion, the more confused I become how certain things work out.
I've tried to setup it now for a solid 5 days, but i think even if i craft someting usable now i could get a backstab in the future when adding new features or need to change settings when it doesnt work like the way i want.
It would be a pain if I needed to rebuild an array from scratch when all the files are already on it.
The build: Parts list
Currently running Unraid 7.0.1
No setup beside a simple array+cache currently, i can beginn from scratch.
I wanted the NAS to match a few criteria:
Powerdraw as low as possible
Futureproof in terms of upgradability
Storage for all my media (movies, shows, images, iso's...)
Arr stack
Linux VM
Mediaserver (Jellyfin is planned)
Access for me and 2-4 people
The plan was to run docker and VM's etc. on the nvme. Only finshed files get transferred to the Hard drives for maximum spindown time and minimal drive wear and tear.
Files like tv shows and entire folders as images (Smartphone photos) should be on the same drive in case of failure, would be a pain in the butt to find the missing episodes / photos.
Torrenting will not be used. Usenet only
For the filestructur i thought about something like this, smiliar to my current HDD on windows
Espacially the following is unclear for me:
Will the the arr's be able to keep track of the content with two shares? (Had problems the past on windows. Arr's on one drive and media on another)
Can i set different split levels on the same share ?
Can i set multiple permission for the same share for the same user (User A has access to movies, but not tv shows)
Or am i just dumb and the solution for my case would just be : Cache+array and two shares.
But how do i ensure here that the arr stack only after finishing the DL, and a VM never writes to the hdd's ?
As i said, it doesnt made "click" for me yet and get more and more confused the more i search for answers.
Would appreciate any help that brings any kind of enlightenment.
