Solutions

  1. dtanton's post in All User shares missing after starting a VM(reboot fixes it) was marked as the answer   
    testing with 16GB leaves more than 4GB for anything else. I did not test with 8GB for the VM, I downgraded to 6.12.14 and the issue is resolved. I guess 7.x.x isn't ready for stable production.
