  2. Hi all, I've been unsuccessfully trying to get my wife's new laptop connect to Unraid over the past few days and am at a point where I exhausted all known to me options to try. Hopefully someone can help me. My network is set up this way: DSL modem <- buffalo wrt-hp-g54 router/access point <- NETGEAR GS108T switch <- Unraid server, PC, HTPC. The laptop when connected to the gigabit switch can map Unraid shares no problem, but when I connect wirelessly, I get an error message that the specified location cannot be found. I can ping the Unraid from the laptop when connected wirelessly though. On the router I run Tomato firmware and it is set up as PPPoE/DHCP and Access Point. In the devices I see that all my network components including the switch are on the same subnet. Only thing is interface type for all is "br0", and the laptop is "eth0". Tried to replace the router with an old BEFSR41 router and run the wrt-hp-g54 as an access point only and connected to the switch, same thing - can connect to the internet, see all my windows PC's on the network, but not the Unraid. Also tried to track network activity with Wireshark, but don't see anything glaring there... though I don't think I make sense out of any data shown there... Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.
  3. For all those paranoid about high LCC counts, like myself, here is the solution that worked for me: 1. Downloaded FDOEMCD.builder.zip from http://www.fdos.org/bootdisks/. 2. Added wdidle3.exe to CDROOT folder. ( http://www.synology.com/support/faq_ima ... didle3.zip ) 3. Executed MAKEISO.BAT to create new FDOEM.ISO CD image file. 4. Burned FDOEM.ISO to CD and viola - it will boot to DOS and allows wdidle3 to run. 5. Disabled wdidle3 timer on all discs (I'm actually using WD20EADS) courtesy of http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?f=124&t=20907 Followed the steps, executed \D to disable intelipower logic, which did not disable it but set to 62 minutes instead. Well, works for me nevertheless. As of this morning my parity drive of 12 days of in service had: 274 hours and the LCC of 4418, which comes down to 16 per hour. Don't know what's causing that, as the other WD greens and the previous parity WD green all have counts of 20-34. Perhaps some new firmware, or the fact that I installed unmenu a couple of weeks ago... Anyway, after firmware changes, it's been about 10 hour since then, the count went up by exactly 1, to 4419. Seems to be working. Paranoia can go to sleep now.
  4. I am thinking of upgrading my system to a server based motherboard. Supermicro X8STE caught my attention. Can someone tell me if the x58 Express/ICH10R currently supported? As for the Intel 82574L Gigabit controller, it looks to be supported.
  5. Shawn, let us know how that board worked for you if you did buy it. I am considering one myself, in the next two weeks or so.
  6. Hi, I am totally new to linux and unRiad, but have been runing unRiad successfully for two weeks. It's a beauty!!! And my wife's experience with HTPC has improved tremendously. I am doing as much reading as I can to educate myself and I stumbled upon something that caught my attention. In short, it's about the finite number of writes that a flash drive can take. I read it's 100,000. I also read that Win XP using NTFS does two writes every second, so one running Win XP with NTFS from a flash drive would see his drive pass away after about 8 hours. So, my question is how often is the flash drive written to under the unRiad system? I guess my concern is about the longevity of the flash drive I am using. If the number of writes is minimal and the theoretical life expectancy of the flash (barring other issues) is 50 years, then it's OK. If, on the other hand, the life expectancy is 2-3 years then I would like to be prepared for that and have a clear mitigation strategy for that. Thank you for your responces in advance.
